I decided to get a Boerboel!

After all the research and the post on here, i chose the breed i want. At first it was a Presa Canario, but i thought they were to dominant for me. So i'm going for a Boerboel, does anyone recommend any breeder's that breed solid boerboel's that aren't too heavy? I was looking at Proudfootboerboels, but would like some other recommendations. I want to be able to drive there, and i would prefer a breeder within 24 hours of driving, i'm in Winnipeg.

Have you check the Boerboels for Sale or the Boerboel International on face book?
Don't know anything about these breeders but this is what I see on a pass by.
Cavan Creek Boerboels (medium size)
West Coast Boerboels (big dogs)
Proudfoot (farm types) !
Atomic (non standards. white creme and black)
ISHMAEL KENNEL
Kiburi Boerboels (heavy Dogs)
MV Boerboel (Medium size, good looking females)

I'm kinda into Proudfoots boerboel's, and MV Boerboels. What breeder would you recommend outta the bunch? Jade is a really nice female, how come you chose a female over a male, did you have any other male dog's in the house? Or just your preference? Anyway i think i'm going to wait on a later litter by proudfoot, so far there dog's are pretty tall and weigh 120-140lbs she said, which is a nice solid weight, but i really live MV for their size, but not overdone dog's.

I like both breeders equally. But since I don't know the breeders or there reputation i suggest you get to know them and see how they kennel the dogs and the history of the parents and older dogs. Due to the size of these dogs temperament is very important. See if they can hook you up with past customers and see how those pups turned out. You really want to know how 5 year old or older dogs have turned out.
Jade was chosen, female because of 2 male dogs in hole already and they are dog aggressive. Last winter she was up around 133lb but has since dropped to 118. But she is built real thick and I like it. When her foreleg heals I will start working her again and try to build in some muscle. I am hoping to find a good used or cheap dog treadmill to help out.

Boerboels can get over 200lbs for males depending on the lines and the breeder's mix. I have seen a few 200lb+ dogs that are still very agile but I would bet endurance suffers with a dog like that. Keep any eye open for male parents in the 160 to 170lb range and female mothers no larger than 140lb. Jades mother is around 135 and her father 165ish and a taller, leaner type of dog.

Beautiful dog Racer, two of the breeds that i really want, that would be an awesome mix, best of both worlds.
Mike Proudfoot's dog's are 125-140lbs in weight, so i'm guessing they breed the more athletic, smaller sized boerboel, not too big, but not small either, and a solid sized boerboel. I really like the Thick boerboel's around the 150 range for the males.
What about you where was your Boerboel from, sorry i think i asked this before.
And yeah do you know of any other good breeders similar to the two i mentioned, if they are far away and a kennel i like, i could probably make the longer trip.

Next to proudfoot I really like fuller boerboels. They have a similar type. Very athletic llooking. If you look at my thread I posted in general about my puppy panzer. He is proudfoots lord raydns son. And he pretty much is a replica in puppy form of Raydn.

Hayley do you know how much Rayden weighs, he is my favorite male that she has. And was Proudfoot a good experience?

I've seen a black Boerboel, i'm not sure where though, is it some kind of defect in color? Ma Boerboel's breeds a black Boerboel.

Raydn is around the 140 mark I believe. Great dog. Very athletic and not a dog for the faint of heart. Dealing with proudfoot was amazing. Such a great breeder to learn from. Even before I decided I wanted a BB she took me under her wing and mentored mentor me. I am excited to have the continuing friendship and support.

And yes stay away from black dogs and the rottie marks. In my opinion they are not pure bred boerboels, but breeders taking another breed of dog and adding it into their breeding program to create unique colored dogs.

Black Boerboels started with a petshop dog named Jim. Petshop meaning he was not a real Boerboel. But people want designer colors and the breeders saw $$$ signs all over these mutts and went with it. They cross Black Labs and Cane Corso and Rottweilers to get these "RARE" colored dogs then charge you ungodly amounts of money for them. I have seen $7,000.00 for a black mutt. The SABT/SABBA recognizes the black BB for now but that might change any day. EBBASA and BI do not allow the color. Currently Africa and some other ORGS are trying to combine all the BB ORGS into one community org that will have the same rules and standards. So if you get a black BB and it is SABT recognized and appraised, it may turn into a mutt the next day. If you want a dog that is black get a CC. You can also get an Ultra Brindle BB that is very close to black and recognized by all the BB orgs.

Here are some Mizpah Ultra Brindle dogs.

Yeah i would prefer to adopt, but do you think it would be okay with another dog at home? I have a golden retriever at home, and he is so submissive and sometimes snaps at dog's that scare him. I want a male Boerboel, but i guess i could bring them to meet, as long as they are cool with each other adopting is the best idea.

A funny thing is i asked this question on a Golden retriever forum, and a couple people brang up Patti Labelle, one even said "who could blame her", To be honest i'm gonna say, she got a dog she couldn't handle and kept him in a cage for 3 years, before Cesar actually got the dog out of the cage, and got the boerboel rehomed. Ever since i asked the question all i had was, " They will attack if they feel the need to", " You need to work with them daily" ( Which i agree with ), and " They are aggressive". Seems like it was all based on the size.

I am guessing your Golden is a male? I would really think and re-consider a male Boerboel. Reason I say that is because Boerboels can be Same sex aggressive. Now, I know Proudfoot is trying to breed against that, but you are at least trying to set yourself up for success if you get a pup of the opposite sex than your current dog.

My pup is a male, reason being is because my current dog is a snarky, female Westhighland White Terrier. A male is going to me accepting of her Bitchiness and Teagan my terrier will be more accepting of a male dog. But that is my opinion. If you plan on going with Proudfoot I would go more in depth and talk to her about it.

Hey mike since your the most knowledgeable boerboel owner here, i had too ask you something. If you were a 19 year old, no kids, moving from a higher neighborhood to something in the middle, were busy often and couple times a week walked your dog's at midnight, were into the larger dog's with a dominant trait, and the avidness to protect their owner, would you choose the boerboel over the other mastiffs? I know it comes to decision, but this breed is amazing, but i want to make sure i can provide the best home for the dog, this question probably sounds silly, and childish, but it's very much serious. I like having social dog's, that's why i didn't get the fila, and also because i don't have the most dog experience, i was also looking into the Akita but don't know anything about them, so i chose the boerboel.

I can't say I know other mastiffs well as I have only owned Rotts, Pitts, Dobermans Rott/Chow mixes and Boerboels when it comes to protective breeds.

A BB is both dogs, a social guardian. I have been able to walk mine through a crowd of over a thousand people without incident but just the other night she showed me that she means business when she is protecting her car. I came out of the store and this jerk was teasing and growing at her in the car. She was just sitting there growling at him. I yelled at the guy and asked WTH did he think he was doing. He replied that she had growled at him as he passed by and wanted to see if she was for real. I looked smiled at the dip and looked at Jade and said "Jade Get" and she blew up stuck her head out the window snarling and barking. The guy fell back on his butt. I pressed the remote door unlock and the guy asked what are you doing. I just told him I was going to show him she was for real. He got up and started to panic but I told him I was just kidding but don't ever tease my dogs again or it wouldn't be the dog he would have to deal with.

They are smart dogs but need good firm training. Jade is just 16 months old and still in training but she has exceeded all my expectations except when she gets bored at classes and lays on her back. If you walk your dog late at night I can tell you that mine will be on high alert when it's dark. Make sure you have a strong collar and strong leash and teach your dog to stop or leave it on command.
