Thanks DD. So it's kind of like the German Shepherd. Vast (vast!!!) differences in American vs Euro (and even Euro working & Euro show), but they're all still called GSDs and theres loads of information readily available so it's MUCH less confusing. Are there any German Mastiff breeder websites? I've seen German and Danish breeder sites, but the ones I run into are still Dane style dogs. Definitely heavier boned, but still...."Daney." I'm not seeing the mastiffy type. Or even a website that addresses it. Is this like, hush hush?

I hope you don't mind all the brain picking. This stuff is all new to me!

I just adopted a 2 year old Great Dane in June. I had seriously been considering the Great Dane or an EM, but it boiled down to timing and temperment. I wound up getting a wonderful
Dane with just the temperment I had been praying for. I am planning on enrolling her in therapy dog work in September. Lexi.Angle2.jpgLexiOnBed.jpg

Pretty much! LOL! There are plenty of GM's breeders out there just depends on the type your looking for. Example French/Russian/Poland lines breed dogs with more head, lip, substance, wrinkle ( mastiff type) . While in places like Scandinavia or the Netherlands their dogs look exactly like American breed dogs. Other parts of Europe have dogs with a combination of both types.

There aren't too many breeders here in the states ( I would trust) personally, if your interested in a GM with a more mastiff type best bet would be to import. However I can't stress enough how research is important. Common issues you'll see in the breed are the excessive red haws around the eyes ( like the neo), roachy back, and cow hocked. The scarey thing is that these dog's with health issues plain as day issues are actually winning shows:eek:

I can send you the links if your interested. Any particular color your looking for?

Not at all I love dog talk, if you haven't noticed LOL!:D

I'm not in the market, just eager to learn about something I knew nothing about. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!

Thanks Forum! I learned something new today. I had not idea the Great Dane was a Mastiff, too. :)

Our last dog was a Dane/Lab mix. He was the BEST! Sweet, cuddly, do ANYTHING for you (kept trying 'til he got it right), brought in the paper, brought us our slippers, loved EVERYBODY and loved BY everybody. But (if this even counts)... he was a "just" 100 lbs, and about a foot shorter than the full dane that lives down the block. We easily could have adopted another dane, but once we started reading about the EM, we looked around (we normally adopt from rescue/shelter groups) and we were lucky to find a full EM litter in the area where we could meet the parents - who were WONDERFUL dogs.

And, so far, so good! Our little EM is so CALM! Definitely a different attitude from the Dane/Lab mix. I'm really looking forward to lots of years with the EM - but will always have a love of Danes, too.
