Hi There - New Cane Corso Mom Ü

HI all - my husband and I just rescued 2 six week old male Cane Corso's (pure bred)....technically we won't take them home until next Thursday but we are very excited. We have decided not to dock their tails or crop their ears. Anyone else not dock or crop??

A little history:
We had our Dogue de Bordeaux "Oz" for 8 years and he was such a love bug. We lost him earlier this year to bloat which was absolutely the single most heart wrenching experience of my life.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss his big slobbery mug. We raw fed OZ since we got him at 8 weeks old, he was 170lbs full grown. We were convinced that we would get another DDB but I was searching local rescues for Mastiffs and this new Momma and her litter of 7 pups were just brought in and we fell in love. We are still planning on a BBD but probably 2-3 years down the line now.
With Oz, we socialized him early on, we took him everywhere we went, introduced him to babies, toddlers, adults, Seniors, etc. We taught him early on basic commands, he knew immediately to sit when he was approached by a child, he would lay down when they began to pet him. We took him to obedience school and continued to work with him until he was fully trained. We are the pack leaders in our house, we love our animals but they know who the boss is. We never were mean physically to Oz but firm commands and consistency was key to making him the perfect dog for us and around others. We are hoping to teach the Cane's the same discipline.
I have been met with quite a bit of negativity when I have told folks we are adopting the Cane Corso's.
I tell them the key is early socialization and training. Am I wrong??
Are there things that we should know (other than what we already do) that are crucial to raising well adjusted, friendly Cane’s???
Thanks in advance for any words of advice!

Your right socialization and training is key I took my Judah everywhere and have a great trainer. He is the most lovable biggest baby I have had. Get them out to meet people in different places as often as you can they will be fine

Welcome to the forum :) Can't wait to see pictures of your babies. Early socialization is very important with the breed :) Take them as many places as possible and meet as many people as you can. As well as training and the rest of the regular stuff one must do when owning a mastiff of any sort. The CC is a fantastic breed, but there are temperament issues in the breed in some lines, fearful skittish behaviors that can improve with socialization but are genetic. Unfortunately that is not addressed as much as it should be. That is not saying that it will be the case in your pups, but it is a part of the breed that needs to be worked on. That aside I personally will never not have a few Corso around our home, they are unlike any other breed. (I know, I know... everyone says that about their breed) I am hooked and a well adjusted Corso is an amazing animal!

OMG look at those scary, man-eating Cane Corsos! What are you thinking adopting those terrible dogs :p Don't worry we have all heard it, you will get use to educating the ones that want to learn and ignore the ones that don't.

As far as choosing not to dock ears or tail, my Cane Corso is the same way. I like his uncropped ears because he is so easy to read, but I fear his tail might be a lamp/decoration/beer bottle on the coffee table destroyer as he gets a little older.

LOL!! Let me tell you, I have had people tell me straight up that these are the worst dogs ever and they would never own one and I should reconsider rescuing these babies.....ugggg. I've had my share of battles when folks would ask me what I fed Oz and I said I fed him a BARF diet and tried to educate them fools on the benefits of feeding raw....some people just don't and never will get it. :hairpull:

Re: Hi There - New Cane Corso Mom Ü

Welcome aboard. I too left my Bailey's ears and tail uncut, she is beautiful!!! And where do these people get their information. Is it CC's or Mastiffs in general that send them into spasms of fear? Mine is an angel. We took her everywhere and introduced her to everything. She's still a puppy...5 months old yesterday and the light of our lives.
We would be lost without her.
Bailey loves other dogs, Loves children, tolerates all their nonsense and just wants to be part of the gang. Yesterday she played football with the neighbour kids...what a ham.
She takes it serious the guarding business, but she's not a threat yet. She might stare you to death or lick you to death. In time her size will deter most ill intended people, but she is a gem, a real jewel in the Crown.
Enjoy you double blessing. You already know how to train them, you will obviously love them. Two might double their mischievous nature, but it will be more laughter than tears, just take time to enjoy every second. Oh, and keep cameras everywhere....they are very photogenic, and the Forum people love pics. More pics please.

It won't change and some people won't change. There are some that approach things with an open mind and are willing to hear the actual info making an informed decision and there are others that just go by what they were told, won't research on their own and will not listen to anything that might contradict their beliefs. Those are the people that aren't worth wasting your time on so I just smile and say you are right my dogs had to be rescued just this morning from my two daughters, I guess I best look at rehoming my daughters.
