Help with eyes!

It all started Friday morning when one of my 3 year old male bullmastiffs eyes seemed to be a little swollen. Come Friday night they were both swelled shut. I took him to the vet Saturday morning and the vet wasn't sure what it was and said it could be an allergic reaction so he prescribed prednisone and an eye ointment. He said it should be better by this morning but its not. He still can't open his eyes. I don't know what else it could be because he has never had any problems with his eyes before. Could it be entropian? Would it happen that fast?

I'm surprised the vet didn't prescribe an antihistamine but the prednisone will help with inflammation. Poor pup. He definitely sounds like an allergic reaction.

Please keep us posted on the poor pup.

I talked to the vet yesterday and he said that if it were allergies the prednisone should have taken care of it by now. He is thinking it might be entropian but he has never
showed any signs of that before. He also said he wants him to see an eye specialist
before he considers surgery. I am taking him in at 9 this morning so I'll let you know what he says.

Good luck and please keep us posted. I didn't post earlier because I just never encountered anything like it.

Just got back from the vet. He now has an ulcer on both of his eyes because they
are swelled so bad it's causing his eyelids to rub his eyes. The ulcers weren't there
Saturday. He said he didn't know what to do so he is going to call me back when he
talks to a specialist.

Poor pup~ Have you used this vet a long time? If it were me, I would get a 2nd opinion. Do you know of a good, ole country vet or a holistic vet?

Dang! I was hoping that you would have some answers. I know waiting has got to be excruciating.

Best to you and your man!

Wow poor pup, I'm sure this has been hard on both of you as it seems to have come on so fast! Unfortunately I don't have any experience in this area but if it's in the budget, I would definitely consult another vet for a second opinion!

Yes, this is the vet I have used since he was a puppy. He's a good vet. He talked to
the eye specialist and they both agree its not entropian. It came on way to fast for that. The specialist told him to continue with the medication and see where he is at in the morning. He said if its not good by morning he will have to tac his eyelids back.

Did he give a medical term for the diagnosis? Tack his eyelids back sounds a little drastic to me. Like I said, if it were me I would get a 2nd opinion especially where they are now talking surgery. Just my opinion.

No he really didn't give a term. He just said his eyes had gotten irritated and now he is having muscle spasms where he is clenching his eyelids shut. It sounds drastic to me also. I think I am going to take him elsewhere before they result to surgery. He has prescribed 3 meds for his eyes plus rimydl and tramadol for pain.

Poor poor dog. Wonder what triggered it to come on so fast. Hope that he gets well soon.

I sure hope the swelling goes down with the new mix of meds... surgery for an allergic reaction sounds pretty drastic!
Not sure what else could have come on that quick, either.

Sending healing thoughts your way!

Well we decided to take him to pvsec in Pittsburgh pa. The opthamalogist said something irritated his eyes causing the swelling and made him squint really hard which led to his eye lashes to rub superficial ulcers on his eyes. He recommended that we do the tacking of the eyelids which he explain is a small surgery just to help his eyes heal. So we went ahead with the surgery. Once they heal in about 2 weeks he wants to see if entropian is what caused all of this. He seems to be doing a lot better now. We just have to wait a couple weeks to let everything heal.

He is very lucky to have such good parents. Hopefully, this was just a fluke thing and all will be well.

Thanks for keeping us posted. Maybe I won't freak out now, if something like this happens to one of ours.
