Gunny loves raw

We're on our 3rd full day of feeding Gunny a raw diet and he absolutely loves it. It's definitely a lot different than kibble since the feedings take quite a bit longer. I imagine when he gets bigger he'll be able to eat chicken parts quicker, but for now he chews off litttle pieces at at time. I've been helping him with the legs by holding it for him, is that okay? He slurps up liver like it's a treat, blink and it's gone. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the great information on here and the advice when we have questions. Once he's been on one protein for a couple weeks and we start giving him other proteins, is okay to give him different one's each meal or should we stick to one per certain amount of time?

Once he's doing well on more than one protein go ahead and mix and match. We generally stick to one type per meal here but thats because Apollo's a goof and doesn't like his food mixed....

Holding the leg is beneficial in 2 ways. First, your teaching him to chew slowly. Second, you are teaching him you are in control of the food. Yes, once you have introduced a meat and he has done fine with it, you can mix and match however you wish. This morning our guys had venison, tripe, and chicken. For dinner they had chicken quarters and a small amount of boneless chicken. Don't forget ours have been raw for over a year. They were slowly introduced to each new meat.

Way to go Gunny!

That's great, I can't wait to be able to give him different meats. I just figure I know I'd get bored eating the same thing every day but I know his system is still getting used to it. I'd seen this mentioned in another thread but it's amazing how much less he poops. Thanks again for the support with this transition. Since Gunny is the first dog I've ever had, I just want to make sure I'm giving him the best thing for him so he'll be with us for as long as possible.

anglebears, I'm glad to know that's a good thing to hold the leg for him. We'll have to meet up sometime for a playdate with the rest of the Houston area members sometime.

Just wait until you get your wife to feed Gunny a ducks head. We can get those for .89 a pound at the Asian markets on Belliare.

Cane was a very pickey eater until we went raw. Sometimes, we have to present something to him 2 or 3 times before he decides he likes it. We use duck heads as treats, first couple of times he wouldn't take his, the girls loved them and he would just sit there and watch them eat. After a couple of times he decided that they were okay and now it is one of his favorites. Don't give up if he turns something down, doesn't mean he won't come around.

We will have to set you up with Natsan and Oz, they have playdates. You could make it an outing. I bet Nat would take you to BonesToGo. Pets are welcome there. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to play with others. Cane and Ziva would do fine with Gunny but they would not be very nice to you. They are Filas and don't accept strangers( you would just look like dinner to Cane :scared2:). I miss out on all the fun!

Lol! I guess that's good that your guard dogs don't like strangers. Sometimes I forget how different the molosser breeds are.

BTW, Gunny will get faster with his eating. It only takes ours about 5 minutes to eat their bone in meals. Our little 35 pound ACD eats her's that fast too.

Glad it's working out with Gunny! Titan eats pigs feet, chicken gizzards, chicken livers and turkey necks for a meal. Tonight he had a pork chop, chicken gizzards and turkey neck.
