Here he is playing tug with the tree. We have always used Jolly balls and that type of thing for our BMs, but he has no interest in them- he just wants to play tug with the rope. We'll take the ball off and knot the rope up for him. He runs outside and launches himself at this thing, lol.

Speaking of experiments for the laboratory, we actually think this dog is deer crossed with fox. Look at him! He is now 31.5" tall and 88 pounds at 9 mos. I am not sure how much taller he'll get but he's grown an inch since we got him and is finally putting on a bit of weight, though is still skinny.

I guess I don't belong on a mastiff forum with this guy - knowing the internet, however, there probably IS a Deer x Fox forum! :lolbangtable:

By the way, his name stuck with Busa. :)

Hey, is he starting to grow into his ears? It looks like it from the picture. Love him!!!

I don't know if he is growing into his ears or not - in person when he sits up and looks at you I often bust out laughing. Poor guy! In pics it depends on the angle whether they show up or not. It helps when your dog cracks you up just with their looks. :D

His body is definitely dane, but the whippety, light kind. I can imagine what his mother must have looked like now. His tail is REALLY LONG like some danes get.

31.5" and 88 pounds though, he's so light and narrow. A very interesting look to him. We get stopped a lot out in public. He is a very finicky eater and skips meals sometimes, but I'm sure he'll fill out eventually to some degree. I don't mind him being light, since it is much easier on his frame.

The other day I was upstairs and I wanted him to stay up there with me so he wouldn't get into mischief downstairs alone, so I put trash bags full of clothes for donation at the top of the stairs, stacked 2 high to block the stairwell. Don't you know it - I hear a thud and rapid footsteps (thundering herd sound, actually) down the stairs, just like normal. I look and he had just leaped right over the stack of bags and went merrily down the stairs like it was nothing. He didn't fall or anything, just jumped over them and landed like a cat, lol. At least he's agile!

Mason has really long tail too, looks like a rat, ew. Stones tail is more "mastiff like"

Has anyone threatened AC yet? I had that before, if its not their sensitive stomachs is their picky nature......sigh I agree I like to keep my dogs light even Thor. My friend kept calling him skinny but she's used to hefty animals.

Haha! He's a gazelle! That's great, he's got a dane personality that's for sure.

Yes! It is that kind of tail, but it has more substance to it, so let me tell you this thing is DEADLY. Knocks pictures off the walls, lol.

So far he does not seem to have a sensitive stomach (first dog in what seems like a million years that I didn't have to switch and switch and switch to find the right thing) but he sure is picky. I never thought I'd be switching food because the dog didn't want to eat it, rather than because it made him break out in hives/gave him pudding poo/made him vomit.

Our other dane X was very similar to Busa when we first got him, and boy oh boy did he fill out, though he was about 3 by the time it happened. He looks like an absolute tank next to Busa, but Busa is now taller, we recently noticed.

Is it typical for danes to remain lanky and slim and not fill out until later?

I can't tell what is dane and what is shepherd (or rotti in Sirius' case). I am not surprised that Sirius filled out so much, with the rott in him, but no clue about shepherds and how they mature.

:lolbangtable: Get ready that tail is only going to get worse! I haven't been smacked with Mason's (yet) but I've closed doors on it. Yeah that was me with Thor and Duke for a while, though they can eat pizza or other human foods with no problem other than bad gas. Mason has a sensitive stomach, but Stone's is cast iron and there's nothing so far he's turned his nose up at. Even his own fecal....gag.

Yeap, that's what I asked about people calling AC on you. People would think I wasn't feeding my dogs, but I have to explain to them its a dane thing especially during those rapid growth. I'm fighting it with Mason now who just turned 5 months just when I get weight on him, he grows and looks skinny again. Depends on the line but yes 2 to 3 years is when they start "bulking" some lines are eve later. Thor didn't really fill out until he was at least 3 going on 4 years.

He's got the dane build that's for sure and by the rapid growth, pickiness and personality, sounds like a winner. LOL. Curious as to what he will look like when he gets older. Very interesting mixing in there.

Well, someone has to take care of the products of these breedings. I simply rescued this dog from people who couldn't take care of him. Apparently a breeder had a female dane in heat, and a pure bred GSD male got to her. I would not have bred these two together - I think the temperament would very likely be a disaster.

sometimes wont be disaster but will be not predictable . and this can increase likelihood of putting other purebreds in risk .

There is not a chance in the world that anyone would mistake this for a pure bred dog, if that's what you mean by putting purebreds at risk, adding the wrong genetic material and passing it off as pure. I'm not sure what you are saying, though.

It is pretty clear in this thread that I didn't take my own dane and GSD and think it a good idea to mate them, but simply adopted a dog that people were giving away. He was neutered at 3 months, more's the pity for his own health.

I'm not afraid of owning a mixed breed dog and recognize that these things happen, many times quite intentionally, by people who don't think there's anything wrong with it.

LizB, I think you did the right thing for the pup and for yourself. Everyone has their opinion and leave it at that. Your pup is adorable and he found a home with lots of love. Period. Do not ever feel that you have to justify your rescuing the pup.

You did the right thing for both of you.

So glad he found a home with you, I used to breed and show shepherds many years ago and just think the GSD head on a Dane body looks so cute, I wonder if both ears will ever go up or if he will have a floppy one for life! Who cares though so long as he is loved for what he is. A really happy boy!
