Great Dane or German Mastiff

I get this question a lot and when I had both Duke and Thor this, inquires quadrupled. For those that don't know there is NO difference, both can be in reference to the same breed. Like with anything in different parts of the world they may have a different name but the meaning is the same. So true is it with the GM and GD. Anyone trying to sell you a different breed of either or is full of it.

Just like the names, people have difference preferences, types, and style. For example this is what people think of when they think of Great Dane:

Many people are unfamiliar with this breed below......

BOTH are Great Danes/German Mastiffs, it does not mean either side is right or wrong. So long as they follow their parent club breed of standard, DDC, AKC, etc..

Edit to add I just call mine GM because of good ol doggy politics. Hope this helps

I feel like more of the ones I see more closely resemble the second picture. The head is so small in that first pic. I prefer the floppy ear look in Danes.

DD, why is it good doggie politics to call them GM's? Your posts are the only time I've ever heard them called anything but Great Danes.

Sorry Kelly when I made that statement "good ol doggy politics" it was sarcastic. I to believe that they should be the same breed. The problem is that breed enthusiasts in BOTH US and European counties don't like the other's interpretation of the great dane. Great Danes have other names like the Boarhound, Grand Danios, Deutsche Doggen, etc.

Funny your the second person to say tell me that. :D When I tell people that my dogs are Great Danes they don't believe me, some US breeders don't even consider my dogs danes at all. So I just say German Mastiff's to stay out of the politics...

so what your saying is if a great dane doesnt look like oversize grayhound then its not a dane ? at some point dane standards had wieght requirements thats when i thought danes were at there worse because u have danes really tall danes only around 120(males) thanks goodness for the german mastiff :p

She's saying a danes a danes a dane. No matter what country, look, or type of dane it is, so long as it follows it's perspective standard, it is indeed a dane. All dane no matter the look nor type are German Mastiffs.

Exactly.

Grazeful, I won't nor will even try to persuade other breeders as to what I like. I only ask for respect for the type of Great Danes I do have. Something that seems to be too much for some people.
