Fun Vet Discussion (not really)

Unless I specifically request a certain vet, then I get whomever has time to see us. I always schedule specifically with my favorite because I'm particular. I wouldn't assume that the first vet chose not to see you due to your feeding method. That would be rather unprofessional of her/him, imo. I also would expect your monthly visit to be just a weigh-in and noted on your chart, rather than a paid visit. As for the spaying - if it's mentioned again just tell them that you have done the research and you have decided that waiting is best for Cinder. You *will* have her spayed, just after she reaches maturity. And that it's not up for discussion. No big deal. If they make it one, then you start looking elsewhere.

We made a habit of dropping by the Vet's office monthly for a weigh-in. It was great for socalization and now the Vet's office is one of Thane's favorite places to go. But we were able to update Thane's weight and height monthly. The Vet's office updated his chart, and appreciated the updated info. Neutering, our vet agreed with waiting 'till 18 - 24 months with the caveat that he will be that much more difficult to handle as he matures. Good luck. Just don't let the Vet's boat payment drive your schedule to spay or neuter. This your decision, not the Vet's.

I actually took Kryten in weekly for weigh-ins and more precisely to make going to the vet's office a good thing. I did get asked regularly when I was going to neuter him. By the time I stopped regular weighing at 1 year old they had completely stopped because it was apparent that their main reason why I had to (he was going to get aggressive) was not applicable anymore.

When we relocated one of the questions on my list to ask was what age the practice recommended spay/neuter giant breeds. If they said less than 18 months to 2 years I thanked them and moved to the next one of the list. I was really shocked how many felt it HAD to be at 6 months, one even said they didn't see unaltered giant breed dogs after that age because of potential aggression issues. We lucked out and the vet closest to us was of the more current method to wait. You've done your research - hold your ground or find a different vet. In the heart of farm county you should have choices.
