Food

I am Curious as to what food most of the TM community is feeding their TM's. I've heard that it's best to give them real food over dry kibbles. I've been feeding kibble but really want to make sure I am giving her all the correct nutrients that may be needed. Also, if someone is feeding real food how is it prepared or do you just purchase the store made raw food?

If she's got normal solid poops, her skin and coat are in good condition, and she's not itching, then the food is working for her, and thats one of the most important things about picking a food.

For a growing giant breed (or any breed really) you want a calcium number between 1.0 and 1.8 with a calcium to phos ratio as close to 1.2 to 1.0 as possible.

I feed raw, using the Prey Model formula of 80% meat, 10% bone, 5%liver, 5% other organs.

If you're concerned about the food you're feeding, another good resource on quality/ingredients is Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor

But, otherwise, I agree with Ruth.

We feed raw for our EM, same Prey Model basis as Ruth (I purchase meat & stuff myself, not much pre-prepared), but it takes some research and planning to transition both you and the dog.

I'll admit that if I'm going to pick out a kibble I've got pretty high standards, but in the over all scheme of things if the dog doesnt' do well on it then it doesn't matter whether it meets my standards or not.

Thanks guys, I guess I have research to do. I have her on Hills Science Diet for large breeds and she seems to like it and her stool is fine. I just want the best for her and there are so many choice you always second guess yourself. I thought of doing real food, but I have so much on my plate right now I am not sure if I could commit the appropriate time to it.

Once you get used to it raw's not that hard, BUT, it does take time to learn it and become comfortable with it, and its not for everyone.

We've fed our 2 Pro Plan (for large breeds) which is what Zeus's breeder weaned him on. Also add in some beef/chicken etc. Not had any problems really , coats, skin and everything have looked great but thought Hades was pooing a bit too much so decided to switch. We're in the transition over to taste of the wild and I do think he's going less.
