Favorite dog shampoo?

My favorite: http://minksheenshampoo.com/ It smells good, and the smell last longer than any other shampoo I've used. It's anti-bacterial/anti-fungal. It repels insects. It leaves my dogs soft and shiny :) I buy it at the big dog show every year :)

What's yours?

It looks like good stuff, but I'm having problems reconciling the purchase of the shampoo with my distaste for mink farms. Right now we use a basic oatmeal moisturizing shampoo (forget the name), but we don't bathe Oscar as much as we probably should. He keeps himself pretty clean and hasn't yet rolled in anything disgusting, but it WOULD be nice to have him smell like something ... else.

Well, it won't help most of you, but I use Crown Royale formula 3 on Apollo, it does an AWESOME job on his coat.

I highly recommend Earthbath dog shampoos. My boxer has very sensitive skin and has had awful reactions to other dog shampoos I have used in the past, but not this one. The Earthbath products are all natural and soap-free so they are very gentle and don't dry out the skin. You should be surprised at the amount of chemicals that are in some other popular brands of dog shampoo.

I use oatmeal shampoo and rub olive oil on his coat before drying him. I found a receipe for homemade shampoo and gonna give that a try. I check out the brands mentioned here.

I have to bathe Titan every week and brush him daily. Raw diet has helped his skin tremendously! We're still on the road to recovery from his skin allergies.

I have been fighting a losing battle with a yeast over growth in my female for the past year, been to the vet and said it was yeast. So after reading everything i can i have tried alot of things for treating the outside of the dog but have come to find out that the dog needs to be treated from the inside. And the only thing that will get rid of the yeast is probiotics or so i have read . So now i have my female on probiotics and have found a natural shampoo that seems to work. Wont know the results of the probiotics for about 3 weeks to a month but i seen a big difference in using the shampoo after one use. Believe it or not its just baking soda wash and a vinegar rinse, wow! And you can use this every day if needed but i bathed her on wed and i will do her again today. What it is, mix 3/4 cup baking soda in gallon of warm water, mix till all disovled. In a seperate jug (i use gallon milk jugs, rinsed out of course lol) mix 1 cup apple cider vinegar in a gallon of warm water. I wet her down then pour the baking soda mix all over her and rub her all over like a massage for a couple minutes, then i rinse that off and pour the vinegar mixture over her and let it sit a few minutes then rinse that off. Then i try to dry her off as quickly as possible.

What i noticed first off is how much faster her coat dried, and shine, and the feel of her fur was different as well. And absolutley NO SMELL, well i little bit vinegary but not overpowering. Yeasty dogs have a stink to them and the day after her bath and still today she has no odour. When i use her reg shampoo which is epi soothe from the vet, she seems fine for 2 days after her bath then she starts to stink again and her skin looks a little red and gets real flakey. Her skin is still a little flakey after this new bathing routine but i think that has to do with whats going on inside as far as yeast. I also noticed she hasnt been scratching and biting herself like she was, so im impressed with such a simple and natural way to bath your dog, no harmfull perfumes or chemicals.

Hey mountainfila! Yes, Titan gets the yeast infections in his ears and he has skin issues. It has greatly improved since raw diet but he still has some skin issues. Yes, I've read about apple cider vinegar rinse. In fact, I'm trying that this weekend when I bathe him. I use GNC Pets Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal shampoo which has also vastly improved his skin condition. I buy the shampoo at PetSmart for $17.99. The oatmeal shampoo stopped working.

Yeast infections can be exasperated with sugar. Avoid all things that contain sugar and that should help as well. The vet used to subscribe cephalexin and steroids. I no longer want to use steroids because it can harm the dog in the long run, as they do with humans. He hasn't been on cephalexin for over a month.

It's a challenging situation but I believe the raw diet, no sugar and his new bathing routine will help get rid of this problem.

Keep me posted on your baby's progress.

I wish i could feed raw but living in the mountains, our only option for meat would be the grocery store and the prices are insane!! I fed raw before it became popular in the early 90's, i lived close to a slaughter house and i could get fresh scraps of beef, chicken , pork for like 10 cents a lb, or frozen in 1 pound blocks. But then feeding raw took off and the prices went up and i moved to the kootenays so finding reasonably priced good dog food has been a chore. But as my experience of feeding dogs for almost 30 years, all these "new holistic brands" come on the market the more i see of these issues with dogs. I blame the food i was feeding her that caused these problems my female is going through. I was feeding pedigree, yes i know BUT it has been THE ONLY food that i have fed that does not cause my dogs to have GAS!! And not just one or 2 dogs but all my dogs that i had on it. So when i seen a new brand that my local country bumpkin store (live in a town of 600) had started to bring in, i liked what i read on the bag, researched the company, made in Alberta, so i switched the 3 dogs i had at the time to it. It was called riplees ranch holistic, 30lbs for $70 not cheap. 2 dogs did fine on it, my fila on the other hand had loose stool constantly and she got itchy and red bumps bad ears bad toe guck, i kept her on it figuring eventualy she would get used to it, but her stools never firmed up even after 4-6 months of being on it. So i was told he would not be bringing it in anymore as his supplier was moving out of the area and he would have to travel to vancouver to get it. So i went back to pedigree and her poops went back to normal but everything else stayed the same. While reading about the yeast all of the articles i have read all say dogs who are yeasty should NOT have potatos of any kind, try and find a high end food WITHOUT potatos in it. I just bought a bag of FROMMS adult gold and have been feeding half pedigree and half fromms, the fromms has probiotics in it as well. I also didnt see until i got it home but it has potato in it, so we will see what happens. The probiotics i give her are human cause i can not find a place to get dog probiotics which is a powder you sprinkle on the food, also not alot of studys have been done about the human grade getting past the dogs stomach acid into the intestines where they need to be, so i bought the enteric coated, i will post up dates in a few weeks about my findings if any lol.

So i took her to the vet and she said she has a yeast overgrowth and she would not give me anything for it, cause it will just make it worse. So i have researched everything to do with yeast and the only thing that everyone is saying is getting the gut flora back to normal and the only way to do that is by flooding the intestines with good bacteria. Most people think if they give yogurt it will get rid of the yeast, but it doesnt , it doesnt have a high enough concentration of bacteria to touch the yeast, so that is why im adding a probiotic with every meal. I want to put the theory to the test and see if it works, they say it takes about 3-6 months to actually get the yeast under control and they say you should see a difference in 3 weeks if its working. So i will keep you posted as our journey has just started, i started the baths on wed and the food and probiotics yesterday, so by the end of july i should see a difference if its working.
