Eye Issues

Our Lola is 5 yrs old and hasn't had any major health issues--we did have her eyes fixed (cherry eye) when she was a puppy and we haven't had any real issues with them. Over the winter she developed a 'hot spot' on her face that she would irritate by scratching/rubbing it. We changed her diet and used benedryl to help clear up the spot. Her hair has just about grown back in and her skin is fine. However, the eye on that side of her face is constantly mucus-sy. Like when she wakes up it's a thicker layer around her eye that dries out into crusty within a few hours of her waking up. She is terrified of the car (bad owner) so it's hard to take her to the vet and we try to treat as much as we can at home. Any suggestions on what this could be? I'd attribute it to seasonal allergies but since it's the same side of her face that had the hot spot, I'm a bit concerned. Thanks so much.
