Expired meat question...

Ok... this may seem like a silly question, but I'm gonna ask anyway... is it OK to feed your dog some meat that may be a few days past the expiration date and starting to get stinky? I haven't fed anything like that to her, but I know you can feed freezer burnt stuff... im just thinking of stuff that might be in the reduced sale bin because it's expiring the next day but could take her a couple-3 days to eat..

I have certainly fed 'smelly meat' to my dogs without any ill effect. They often gulp down rotting rabbit carcasses too as we are over run with wild rabbits. I find this repulsive but they don't.I just need to make sure it does not lead to worms when they do this in the summer. but if you freezing stuff then that would kill off any nasties.

I'm interested in knowing this also. My gut tells me that it should be fine, just check the sodium levels to make sure it's under for dogs, as they have the correct gut stuff to process it. People are more prone to getting salmonella or e-coli from touching affected raw food than the dog is getting sick from it.

What others have said. I figure Emma thinks chicken poop is a delicacy and no telling what she eats running in the woods. Meat that smells a little off isn't going to hurt them!

Food Sell-By Dates: What They Really Tell You - ABC News

Depends on if you are talking use by or sell by as the "expiration date." As a retired chef with more hours of human food safety training than I can keep track of any more there is a difference. This article gives a pretty good explanation. My advice to you would be package the item into what she can eat in one day and freeze the rest. Thawing only what she eats for the day. More for your safety than the dogs.

Dogs can digest some of the nastiest road kill type stuff and not get sick. Growing up on a farm I saw our dogs eat things that were DISGUSTING with no ill effects.

I feed stinky stuff... since I pull meals for the week out of the freezer, sometimes things get a bit...ah... ripe... by the last day. Denna doesn't mind the stinky stuff (at all), but I think she's more excited about fresh stuff.

Just 2-3 days past the 'best buy' date wouldn't bother me at all...

I usually make up her meals about 4-5 days at a time and keep them in the garage fridge for storage and have one container inside in the reg fridge...
Since we've had a pretty cold winter, the garage fridge keeps most things pretty frozen anyway... lol..
Thanks for the advice all!!! I guess if I find a few goodies in the sale bin, she'll be alright with it!!!

Yes, I've fed some stinky meat that was in the fridge for the week. Oh wait! That was just the tripe;) lol after seeing how much the 2 pups LOVED stinky tripe the meat was no issue. Now that Chica will only eat frozen meatballs we rarely have thawed meat out anymore.

"Best before" does not usually mean "bad after", but you want to be careful with the handling anything that may really be off for the sake of the people in your house...especially if anyone is especially vulnerable.
