Dogo in a home with a Corso and small children?

We currently have a 2 year old male Cane Corso and a 10 year old female German Shepherd. Sadly, the Shepherd is in poor health now and we are thinkiing about a new dog after she goes. We also have two kids, an 8 year old and a 5 year old. I'm considering a Dogo (wife wants to get another Corso instead). Curious as to people's thoughts about introducing a Dogo into this environment?

DSCN3436.jpgDSCN2980.jpgDSCN2916.jpgI have a pit bull and Dogo both males and a 4 year old son. They are great together, I dont leave them alone for long amounts of time. I kennel them. Every night they sleep curled up together. Jake (dogo) is great with my son, protective, loving .I say go for it

There is nothing wrong with this combination as long as you are serious about the training of your dogs. If you're the type to keep your dogs separate, this can be a volitale mix even if you get a female. Remember, the dogs that we're talking about are head and shoulders above regular dogs like GSD,DOB or Rotts. with regards to aggression and willingness to fight.

I personally know of a female Dogo/Rott mix that was given to a man who owned three pitbulls. This nine month old mix killed all of the pitbulls when he left them in the apartment alone. IMO, the pitbull owner's ego was so brusied that he had the female put down. To the pitbull family out there I realize these may not have been game dogs but she had never been on a hunt and was only half dogo.

Let me say that before somebody missinterprets my response, I am not and never have been a dog fighter but I do apreciate the dogs that have been created with this kind of aggression.

In short make sure you have an exprerienced trainer on hand that is accustomed to training these Superior Guardians or that you have very good kennels.

In researching the presa canario and Cane I came across this order of child friendliness: Least child compatible Presa Canario, but the Dogo and Cane seem to be real close with the Cane being called a better family dog out of the more athletic mastiff breeds.

I have a pressa, a dogo and a CC....I also have 7 kids.....it takes a lot of work but we all get along and feel safe. We have a system that works and is ALWAYS getting improvement when we see a need. ...I think the most important part is people are first and dogs second...and im Alpha..in the yard and in my house

With the Kids he should be fine but with your Corso it depends, at around 2 years they mature and things change. It depends on your Corso temperament.

I'm not sure if I missed a post (if so the link would be much appreciated!!) but.. I wanted to ask what is your system? It would appear from reading your posts that you have a GOOD system. Any chance you'd share some tips or tricks?

I've grown up with hunting and large breed dogs, so I understand the need for attaining alpha status. But hearing how you set up your hierarchy with kids in mind would be much appreciated![did you train your dog to be really well behaved and to put up with kids antics? Or did you train your children early on how to interact with dogs? Both?]

Or dealing with strangers (are they friendly if properly introduced, or do you follow more of a "no talk, no touch, no eye contact" type of policy?

The system is more of habits and rules. I have tried several techniques but found the latest one yields the best behavior.
All my older kids will take turns handling a puppy for a week at a time. Sleep with them, feed them, wash them, teach them, etc. This has been the best for dogs to learn there place. Kids too. Its a win-win. Next is exposure out of the house.
Again for different reasons I choose to not expose my Pressa to people (can touch, pet and look). No one handles the leash, give commands or corrects him.The DOGO listen to everyone. Hes has the most aggression and im glad we did it that way. Our CC is just a verry sweet loving dog. Gets along with all people and all non dominate dogs. She needed the least amount of exposure.
