Hi I have a 7 month old Dogo that as of 1 weeke ago all of a sudden his penis has started to bleed , I have taken him to 2 different vets now .
1 said something about his penis is too big blah blah , the other said about the inner tube inside might be scraped or something and put him on some meds .
It had almost completly stopped until last night it started up all over again .
Any input , PS he is not fixed and will not be until 1.5 years if I can help it .

I have seen an episode of Dr Pol and he had a male on there that had a similar thing you are talking about. He said it is hormonal and curing the issue is to fix them, he said the cause was the dog was maturing and he was probably licking it to much and irritating it. Anyway at the end of the episode it does a follow up on the patients he treated and it said the dog did not have any more issues of bleeding. Not saying this is your dogs issue but do you notice him licking himself more then normal?

Hello,

I have a 17 months old Dogo who had the same issue, i first discovered the problem when i found drops of blood on the floor.

I will start with the root cause:

The reason for the bleeding was caused by the dog becoming sexually mature and started to mount his brother (15 month old Weimaraner) and the rubbing caused the penis to bleed. After the dogo started licking it making the situation worst, this behavior and bleeding continued from the age of 9 months up until 11 months.
At first I did not know that what I stated above was the root cause, initially I thought it was an infection and later due to feedback from the vet I thought it was due to the penis been large and breaking the skin when the dog had an erection.

I got second opinion and third opinion from a vet that specializes in Dogo Argentino as he is a breeder here in Brazil and he explained that at times this happens with Dogos and gave me tips to overcome this stage.
How I treated it:
The first thing was to buy some sterile water and place it inside the refrigerator. Take the water and place in the freezer 30 minutes before applying it, how you apply it is by getting a syringe and filling it with the really cold sterile water and then squirt the water inside the penis (from the tip of the penis squirt the water inside the skin) and holding the opening so that the sterile water does not spill, hold it for about 1 minute and then proceed to clean it.
This will help clean the penis to prevent infection and also help with healing the area that is bleeding. If you have another dog in the household separate the dogs when not supervised to avoid the dogs from mounting each other. If you don’t have other dogs make sure you observe your dog to see if he is masturbating with an object (like the side of your bead support) and remove that object or the access of the dog to that object. The licking is the hard part to stop so helping the area heal will reduce the urge of the dog to lick himself.
I freaked out at the beginning so I know your concern but it is kind of normal at least from what I have seen (I know all the major breeders here in Brazil) so if you have any questions please let me know.

I have seen this on 2 dogs. One was Duncan my RottenChow and the other was a St. Bernard mix. On the St. Barnard the owner (vet tech) had him x-rayed found a small stone had become lodged inside of the penile sheath and had cut both the sheath and the penis. A saline flush using a large syringe dislodged the stone and he healed up in just a couple days. Turned out it was a piece of asphalt. On Duncan it was the big penis syndrome. The dog's penis is just obscenely huge and when he would get excited 2 things would happen. 1 was he became so engorged that the capillaries would break and blood literally leaked through the skin of the penis. It was just a small amount but it looked bad. 2 was sometimes he would be partially extended and become excited and the sheath would get caught on the penis and tear just enough to cause some bleeding. He would heal up in a day or 2 after this would happen.

And yes the vet said exactly this. "His penis is too big, if we neuter him he will not get as excited and it will reduce both of his issues" I had him neutered a few months later because of the aggression issues (didn't help) but he never had a bloody penis since.
