We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.
Thanks, was just curious. Hubs had previously been broken into in his old house and that made him very security conscious. I can only imagine the feeling that would leave you with.
We have a very similar system at work. We finally gave up on the lock; it started to not work on most of the doors. It would probably be ok for home use; it took almost 10 years for the locks to give out, & that's using some of them almost every day, locking them at least twice a day.
Thanks all for sharing your experiences. I called the local distributor for them and he doesn't recommend the largest sized ones. They have had too many warranty issues. Smaller ones are great but if a large dog tries to go out them too fast too many times they can break the mechanism - so not going to work for us. Angus can go from 0 to 60 at warp speed as he goes out the back door the way it is. So.......the search continues.
I agree! The one question I learned to ask years ago on home projects was if they would put their product in their own home - if there was any hesitation I don't use it. Hasn't failed me yet and this is my 5th home remodel. (All different houses.)
Unless those flaps are super soft and pliable do not go with a two flap dog door. It is a great way to injure a dog if they go part way and then pull back. Sometimes the doors will lock around them and pinch tighter as they pull.
As far as a big dog door being a security risk. When you leave and the dog is with you simply make or buy a locking cover for it that is more substantial than a plastic panel. My old house we had a 1/2in thick steel plate we slid into place and bolted in when we went out of town.
