Hi everyone, new to this forum. I adopted an EM a while ago and she has a tattoo in her ear "TNT3". I am assuming that maybe this is the breeder's kennel name? I'm from R.I but cannot be sure where the dog originated from. Any insight as to what the tattoo might be and if it is a kennel name... any info on it?

I personally have never heard of breeders tattooing their dogs... Ive heard of dogs that have bitten someone get tattooed and if it happens again they will be PTS. Not trying to scare you, Im just not aware of all the reasons to tattoo a dog :)

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in

Thank you for rescueing! Good luck with her!

They used to, and some still do tattoo dogs instead of microchip, mainly before the days of microchips ;).
I do not believe the AKC still accepts, but the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) will accept a tattoo number.
There are links that you can find to help trace if you want. I would imagine is either the kennel or a puppy mill as that tattoo sounds too short for an identification number outside of a kennel/mill.
That would be my guess at least.
Good luck in your search

thanks for the insight...it would not surprise me at all if she came from a mill... she is a lemon physically, but I have to say her temperament is fantastic. the best dog I've ever owned

For some reason I just remembered this post and wanted to add something.
We had my pup Cribs Tattooed as in the ring sport world they want the dog tattooed for easy identification. To prove that the dog with the registered tattoo is indeed the dog trialing. They accept microchips, but you need to have a scanner so the tattoo is a clear identification and is on her CKC regstration as well.
But I believe it is 2 numbers and 3 letters.
I know is an old thread but I recently remembered it lol

I know some breeders used to use tattoos in the ear but then there were dogs being stolen and their ear cut off. :( They then started tattooing inside of one leg but this was way back before micro-chips.

I am not sure if this would be the case or not....I know with the Military they accept a lot more dogs into their training program then make it all the way through. These dogs are tattooed in their ears (a serial # of sorts, to identify base). When dogs don't make the cut they make them available for adoption, usually to personnel first, but also to the public. Just a thought.

Our lab has his ear tattooed. It is his ckc number. Usually the initials of the kennel is in it but I can't see it very well too give you the number. He is 8 so 8 years ago it was very common to still tattoo. I remember when my parents bred Pomeranians, there was no microchipping and tattoos were done right across the belly and not on the ear. There would be this huge number across the skin of the belly and the poor dog would look so horrible because of it. I don't think CKC has switched solely to microchips yet and some breeders still tattoo but it's been a while since I checked.

The tattoo is an ideal means of identification for dogs being tested for genetically inherited diseases and also for dogs in exhibition trial or fieldwork where it is a necessity to have positive visual identification. It is cost effective to both individual owners and breeders..

Just saw the reply post. Petey is Canadian Kennel Club. CKC...We're Canadian, eh. :) Just kidding. We do need to watch though as a number of breeders have started with the continental kennel club up here and they advertise them as CKC so people don't realize that it isn't Canadian... until it is too late.
