Dane types

They pretty much want danes to be courageous and calm for the most part, only taking action when necessary, even though they don't test for it.......

Okay. So protective but not reactive unless a situation arises.. Very cool. You mean breeders don't test breeding stock for proper temperament?

Nope. :( Unfortunatley very few do. I'm not sure if they have such tests overseas, since this breed doesn't require the working dog test. Some breeders in Czech are starting to test danes in defense and workability.

That sucks =(. Many breeders in general do a poor job of testing their breeding stock, and preserving a breeds work ability. Very sad. Its hard to tell now days what a breeds true temperament should be and or use to be. So many poor specimens out there, of all breeds. I have met some nice Great Danes though for sure, that fit the temperament description you gave me. Very calm and sweet. But I wouldn't want to mess with their loved ones either =)

The majority of dane people are for show only. If the dog does well in the ring, standing quiet etc, than it has a "good temp." I asked a few years back why most don't venture off in other disciplines, like TT, OB, etc. The response ( after some snark) was that there simply wasn't enough time in between showing. Also the majority are against danes in PP, sch, etc, due to the fact they don't have the "right temprament" for it. :banghead: I wish they would make up their minds........

LOL, most danes just put a good display, although there are some that will "take care of business." I've only heard about them on other forums, but its nice to know that there are solid danes out there. I did read on the dane forum about their two danes taking down a deer. Personally I find that impressive, given the rep that danes have.

Very true.......when I worked in a pet store we had a black dane that was just nuts although most of it was the 4' owner.

I will. Most are old with the exception fo the one club in the Czech Republic. However they haven't updated anything in quite a while, BUT they are doing a defense seminar this summer.

Same here. The Harls are kind of a Harl line to find a decent dog IMO. Some of them are either to hefty or too poorly built. On top of that I don't like the fact that most are breeding harl to harl:mad:
Forgive my ignorance; why is that bad? Is it similar to double merle aussies? Does it produce birth defects?

It can lead to still births and your more likely to get the white Danes which do have more health problems. That is what I've discovered so far in my research. I'm looking into getting a harl in a few years and I've been discovering just why a good one is more expensive than most other colors.

Basic rundown of GD/GM types. Each part of the world has a different style and lines of GD/GM's

French, Russia, Italian, Poland lines are usually more "mastiffy" or "houndish" of the lines. They tend to have a more wrinkled expression with a more robust, "shorter" build. See examples below. Common faults usually is that they tend tend to have eye problems ( exposed haw), poor rear ( no angle), cow hocked, and have roachy backs.

I'm not sure if you mean the wedge "apple-shape" heads or the "ideal" dane head. Depending on who or what you believe in Great Dane are hounds. They were called "Boarhounds" in days of old, but they are a molosser type of dog. Like your preference of dane type it just depends on the line you prefer.

Maybe its because I lived in the U.K. for so long, but I really do prefer the uncropped look. I am also amused by the idea of 'mastiffy' as a descriptor. One of our EM rescues we describe as 'Great Dane' like.

Its not just you, honestly I don't care while I do prefer cropped I love a dane just because. I have one cropped and one uncropped I like them both oddly enough they fit one another's personality. There are actually people in this breed that will move onto another if they banned ear cropping and docking in the US. Shows exactly what kind of people in the breed are........

"Euro" Danes are HIGHLY looked down upon in the states and vise versa overseas with "American" Danes. Personally I like my "mastiffy" danes. and so do the people that meet them.
