Can Boerboels still work?

I've been hearing lately on other sites that most Boerboels in the US are being bred for size and appearance and not for working ability. Can Boerboels still work? I'm referring specifically to protection sports and hog catching, both of which require drive and courage. I don't want to hear "my Boerboel likes to run around and play". What kind of working titles are they earning?

We used to have some very active Boerboel owners but I haven't seen them on in a very long time. I was hoping one of them was lurking and would address your question.

from what I've seen an American bulldog of the right breeding , right owner , right raising , can make any "working" dog look inferior , at anything ……..there been some great protection dogs , catchdogs , sport dogs , pull dogs , smart dogs , love to bite , lots of fight , plenty linebred on game ……. Banuelos , boyd , Metcalf , litchardt , lopez , mullens , bbk , leclerc , nor cal , koura , JDJ too many to remember , long pedigrees of proven dogs bred and raised by proven working dog folks , some of those dogs were unsuitable as anything but workers …….. there are some pretty adept trainers , I've seen some pretty crappy "titled" dogs …… outside traditional working breeds in the united states I've not seen the kind of breeders I've seen breeding AB's breeding any mastiff breeds , possibly a couple bandog breeders/trainers …..

Every dog can work if it has fitness and drive ,my girl would be great example she has a lot of drive athletic and is very food motivated so with enough training i know she could do plenty of that, but to me working for protection and all that bite work is the most stupidest thing in the world and i will never think otherwise. Also boerboels are known for their own thinking and decision they can be very independent.

I'm just batting around the idea of my next dog. AB's are great, but I want something with a bit more size and more territorial guarding instinct. I love the size and appearance of the Boerboel, but I'm not sure if they have the kind of drive and trainability I'm looking for. Right now the Cane Corso seems to be the breed that checks off the most boxes for me, but that can change and it won't be for a while anyway.

You may want to also research the Black Mouth Cur. Our girl at her peek weighed 90 LBs. She was very much territorial and aggressive towards strangers/other animals with a prey drive. Committed to family and never left our side. Frankly, when the kids were younger, it was a negative as we couldn’t chance her “herding drive” with their friends and had to kennel her for their safety. We are NOT training Daisy, our Boerboel in protection work etc. Her size and bark will be enough. I chuckled at your first thread- Daisy does LOVE TO PLAY. All the best in choosing your next pup. Will keep you all posted with Daisy’s growth and development.

Who in their right mind ever watches Old Yeller, lol? Omg, I remember them making us all sit down on the floor and watch it in first grade. I knew what was coming, being a Wonderful World of Disney fan, and shut my eyes and plugged my ears. Ugh. And in 7th grade they made us read Where the Red Fern Grows. I finished it at home, thank goodness. Every single person in class was crying in silent reading.

Yeah, that's a classic Disney movie. Old Yeller happened to be a Black Mouth Cur in real life. That's why I brought it up.

"If" you were able to find a working line Yes, it'd have to be from foundation stock before too many hands polluted the pie.. You might keep in mind that many of these latest imported mastiff breeds were awesome when 1st arrived but $, showing , the unscrupulous and the akc have screwed them up of course.. IMO.. Others had to be saved and use of outside breeds may not have been the same recipe as the original.. The Cane corso being such..
