Bullmastiff scratching himself silly

My 5 month 30.3k bullmastiff Hitch, has been scratching so much we've started calling him itchy Hitchy. Took him to the vet and he said he had a skin infection. He has pimples and red spots around his genitals, raw pustules under his arms, and his lower lip. The vet said the skin was infected but he didn't know what caused the infection. He said it could have been anything. Because he is only 5 mon he didn't want to put him on steroids. So this is what he came up with. Antibiotics for the infection, benedryl to make him sleepy and too lazy to scratch, a sock attached to each foot with electrical tape and t-shirts head and front feet through one t-shirt and tail and hind feet through the other, tie a knot in the middle then to top it all off, a cone and special antiseptic soap to be applied 3 times a day. I looked at him like he was crazy but he told me that all of these things used together however time consuming they may be, worked as well as steroids. You should see my poor baby. Just wondering if anyone else had to do this?

He is eating NOW puppy food for large breed dogs and is quite high in duck and trout protein and it contains no grains and salmon oil. The only treats he eats are dried liver treats. He is also given smoked beef leg bones with marrow. This summer he ate peaches and nectarines but the itching didn't start then. He started about a week ago. we didn't change anything. the vet said possibly enviromental

It could be an environmental allergen causing the itching. Have you changed anything in the house or planted any new plants in the yard?

He could also be allergic to the duck or trout. How long has he been on the current dog food?

BTW, mastiff pups should be eating large breed adult food not puppy food.

He's really improving so whatever we're doing is working. But my poor baby in his tie dye t-shirt and his sweat socks and cone head. I'm not too worried about his food as the vet did say duck and trout were low in allergens and although big for his age is in excellent physical condition. And here's a vote for the longevity of the bullie: he said over the last 10 years or so of his practice he's seen quite a few live to 11 or 12 years. Long live the bullie.

Glad to hear his doing better. I just wanted to mention that my EM is unable to eat any sort of processed poultry (chicken, turkey and duck). Thankfully his only problem with them is digestive, he gets extreme gas and diarrhea. Only the gas is an immediate symptom the diarrhea takes a few weeks to develop. He's an example of a dog that is unable to eat duck despite it being termed as 'good' for dogs with food protein sensitivities/allergies. If you are unable to discover the cause as anything environmental I would try a fish based food, I fed Go! Shine and sensitivity Salmon to Kryten while he was under a year.

I liked what I saw in the NOW food line - we use the big breed adult as treats around here.

Glad the routine is working - but you MUST post pictures of his outfit!!! :)

It's so nice to hear that your vet isn't willy nilly about using steroids. I second the picture request!
