Breeding with a male with seizures

I was not aware you already had to know the answer to a question before you asked it on this board. Of course I'm serious. I've been doing research and called the vet and as far as I can tell it's not hereditary. But, since you people are BEYOND rude and disrespectful I don't want to hear anything you have to say.

OP try not to take it personally. We've had trolls on this forum that's why we asked. Honestly its outrageously common sense as to the answer to you question. Like to "good" to be true.

To answer your question though. No....just no. Unless you want future pups with this disease and the heart break of their owners.

Can you just answer the question???? What the hell is wrong with all of you?? We're best friends with the people and they have an amazing dog. No, I don't know much about breeding and we are tossing the idea around and trying to make an educated decision...no thanks to any of you. At first your comments made me think I was a complete idiot for asking because it is ok....now it looks like you are saying it is not. My vet said it is not hereditary and should be fine. I thought I'd see what the pros on line had to say....I had no idea I was entering such a hateful place. I am literally at a loss for words with the time I have wasted on this board this afternoon.

Has the dog been to the vet & been diagnosed? If it's epilepsy then no I would not breed him. English mastiffs can have large litters & I think as DD said it may cause a lot of heart break with new puppy owners if their pups had got it too. Also, has the male been health tested & had clearances on hips, elbows, eyes? If no then again I would not breed him. You're taking way too much of risk with the seizures & then not being health tested I just wouldn't do it. He may be a great dog, sweet, loving, etc but that doesn't give you a good enough reason to breed him. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

Should we breed with a friend's male English Mastiff that has been having a lot of seizures lately?
Gina

No, you should not. And really, you probably shouldn't breed with your friend's dog even if it doesn't have a seizure disorder. Breeding isn't something that should be taken lightly.

Enjoy your pet.

Also, this makes me want to ask the questions about the female you are considering breeding to this male. How old is she? Has she been tested for hips, eyes, elbows, etc? I'm not saying a vet exam & oh yeah your dog is healthy. I'm talking about having everything x-rayed & certified. What happens when the puppies come & there's 10 pups that are now rejected by mom & you have to hand feed them? Are you prepared for the time & effort you are going to have to put into that? Seizures or not I just don't think it's a good idea for you to even consider breeding.

There was a Great Dane in one of the classes I took with Sadie. They had purchased him on a breeding contract and at 8 months of age he started having seizures and their vet told them DO Not Breed Him. Even though it may not be hereditary, it is not worth the risk. You would knowingly potentially pass on a devastating disease to the pups.

So what if the vet was wrong? What if you have a litter of 10 gorgeous pups and they go to their homes in 8 weeks and 1 has a seizure and dies? Guess who's holding the bag? YOU!!!! Guess who will want their money back. Guess what will happen when the other buyers found out you knew the father had seizures and bred with him anyway. Guess who will be in bankruptcy court because all the buyers want their money back. DING DING...YUP YOU

thank you, that's an excellent point. I get that the rest of you think I'm idiot but I'm actually trying to educate myself and make the best decision...I have to wonder how you treat the actual idiots. No, I'm not a breeder, yes I know what a huge thing this is. I just found out today the male has been having seizures due to Valley Fever in his youth. I was not an animal person before we rescued Chevelle. This one dog has made me fall in love. Yes, we want to share her with the world, no it's not about the money. Please at least try to be respectful to people in the future...I get you are doing what's best for this breed but you have a pretty crappy execution plan.

Chevelle you have to understand from some of the posters positions. Some work at vet clinics or shelters. They have been in their particular breed for years. They have knowledge that honestly you shouldn't discount because your feeling got hurt. When I first joined this forum I wrote a post about my 4 month old puppy barking and lunging at strangers. Somebody actually said she was unstable. HAHAHA. As much as that pissed me off, I hung around and have come to really appreciate the info they give. The beautiful thing about knowledge is even though it may seem flawed, it's still important to soak up incase you have to tell an idiot what another idiot said.

You have to understand that mastiff owners are very passionate people. It is not a personal attack on you. Some of the mastiff breeds are in danger of being destroyed bc BYBs don't care about the wellness of the dogs involved. I understand you love your dog & it's not about money but you may change your mind when determining puppy price bc your girl needed an unexpected emergency c-section, vaccines for the pups, etc. Breeding is costly. And while you may have the best intentions, it just may not be the right situation.
