Breed Standards

You might not, or might not say it, but others sure do. There are some breeders who talk about how perfect their dogs are and no one's dog could possibly compare. Some people say if you have to ask for help in working on an issue with your dog, then you shouldn't have one. I was specifically told I shouldn't have a dog because I live in a condo. And I agree, it all should be taken with a grain of salt.
The thing many of those on that page are forgetting is it REALLY WASN"T that long ago they were new to the breed, asking questions as well. I have a hard time even reading that discussion board as the majority of the "experts" posting there should be listening and learning, as they themselves haven't put in the time, rather then acting like self proclaimed know-it-alls. I am sorry if your experience's haven't been the best there, but there are those that post bits of wisdom is just a matter of sifting through to find it. I am not saying that I am more knowledgeable then many that post there, I may have put in more time and not jumped onto the breeder wagon as fast, but there is a TON more for me to learn. Everyone should be treated with respect, as that is how the breed will flourish is new ideas and new people learning. Again I do apologize if any made you feel bad or acted superior, everyone started somewhere :)

Please don't apologize for things others have done!

The trouble with utilitarian breeds is they were versatile. You have dogs with a variety of temperaments depending on the needs of the owner, if one dog is herding cattle, one dog is guarding some straw, one dog is going to the market pulling a cart... for example, their temperaments will vary. But dogs, like people, vary in personality and temperament. Trying to fit them all into a tiny box is not necessarily going to work. I do agree however the bottom line is that they all should be protective, as that is what these breeds are all about.

I agree. Which is why to me the important part, and often part that is missing is the protective aspect. Thee are filas that just assume eat you then look at you and then some that will let you walk right in the fence and only look. Neither to me make a bad fila. They become a bad fila when someone tries to hit you and they dont do what they were intended to do. ome would argue the softer one aint right but at the end of te day that soft one was here 100yr ago and will be here 100yr from now. It say's no where in the standard a fila cant lay there and wait even though some would lead you to think otherwise. But it is clearly in there that the fila should engage and no retreat. So there is no box to put them in. But there is a clear fail or pass to be had
