Breed question... What is this puppy?

I got this big boy from the local kill shelter, they said 9 month old pit mix but he doesn't look much like pits I've had before, he definitely doesn't have all his teeth yet and very puppy clumsy, but already 60 pounds! Very smart and sweet, great with other dogs and cats, just no clue what he really is... His short lower jaw made me think Presa? He also has very muscular shoulders!

I had a hard look at the first picture and my feeling about the eyes said, Golden Retriever, but the rest...wow, too hard to tell. The pic with him lying down on his side...that looked Mastiff. At any rate...that's a big boy, and time will tell if you don't do the DNA, but...don't rule out Boerbel, the South African Mastiff. I don't see pit there at all, but, as you know, pit mixes come in all shapes and sizes. How tall is he at the shoulder? Could you get a straight on pic of the face where the width of the jaw is more obvious? 60lbs at approx 9 months...? Here are a couple of resources.

"At around four months of age -- and it can vary from breed to breed and even from dog to dog -- the 28 puppy teeth are replaced with 42 adult canine teeth, which include the molars. You will see six incisors on the top and bottom (these are the smaller front teeth located between the large fang-like canines).Apr 26, 2015"

Thank you! His name is Maui and He's 21" to the shoulder and I got a better picture of him for you! Thank you for responding!

Welcome. Maui is a handsome guy. I can see him being a possible pit mix. Tough to say with what. I don't really see mastiff in him, but you never know. My daughter's boxer pup is 8 months old, about 21" tall and weighs around 58lbs, so similar in size.

Thank you for looking! He would be about the size of a boxer pup but definitely a bigger snout... The wicked over bite looks more Cane Corso\presa conario... He's definitely a big ol mutt...

My Cane Corso doesn't have any overbite issue, so...not sure what you are referring to about that. Really can't see anything supportive of Mastiff from the front view, but, does remind me of Mustang Sally a bit, Vicki's dog (the administrator) and she is a Pitbull.

I think if he doesn't have all his permanent adult teeth yet, he might be younger than what you were told.

But, whatever his breed, he is a happy, dog with a sunny disposition and he has found a loving home and good mom. We'll make him an Honorary Mastiff if his development doesn't bear out your initial impression. But...I have a feeling he's going to get very big, he's already very tall...we'll see...we'll see!

That's a beautiful girl! Definitely similar! And sorry I guess most the pictures I saw about canecorso pups had a bit of a shorter looking bottom jaw like Maui... Maybe I'm crazy! Lol

I don't think there's any boxer in him. Just giving you a comparison of a similarly aged pup with no mastiff in it. Admittedly I don't know a lot about the Presa, but I thought they were bred to have a scissor bite. I know certain breeds are bred for an underbite, but I don't know of any where an overbite is to standard. I also agree with Bailey's Mom in that if he doesn't have all his adult teeth he's probably younger than you were told. What did your vet say?

I'm waiting on my vet appointment, they are booked up for wellness apts, but looking at his teeth more he's probably alot younger... Which makes sense with how clumsy and puppy like he still is! Just in the 2 weeks I've had him he's grown and colors have darkened some down his back and around his muzzle!

Hi Amy,
Welcome to the forum! And what a beautiful boy you have there...
I do see terrier and bull. What I've seen in pit bulls is a lot of them don't have that tradition pit bull look. Your boy there to me he looks like a pit bull.... I do know a lot of people are calling their pit "mixed this and that" because some dumb ass busy bodies that have no friggen clue and have gotten this breed banded. Ya I know dumb asses they are for sure.... And does it really matter what breed or mix breed he maybe. He really is gorgeous. Thank for posting the picture

Thank you for your response! I definitely think he's pitbull something if he's mixed at all, to me he seems rather large for your average pit, he's already taller and has a much bigger head than my sisters AmStaf pit. I don't really care what he is cause he's wonderful and sweet and playful, just more curious since he's a pound puppy...
