Apollo is already growing in his winter coat....

yah, I didn't get any good pictures this year of Apollo without his winter coat, I'd planned to, but the weather sucked, and he wasn't done shedding....now all the sudden the weather's lovely but he's already growing it back in!

Well, since I had to give Tessa a bath today, count me in on the winter coat thing...
But I'm not noticing undercoat, it's getting super thick on her thighs & bum, a bit on the back of her neck--and the craziness of her tail fur--

This tail has a mind of it's own.

But she has not shed a fur since her puppy coat blew. It's the strangest thing bathing a pooch & they don't shed.
Actually it's quite lovely!!! I didn't have to pull fur from my drain.

My last girl had the shepherd coat, didn't fully develop til she was about 3, but jeeze the fur shed never seemed to end.
I think I could do just a few weeks of heavy shed if it means most of the summer without a ton of fur flying everywhere.

Moo's trousers are now almost completely gone. I've not seen it as bad as this summer, I am literally shocked at the difference to last year. I'll have to take a picture so you can see what I mean, she is a completely different dog coat wise. She is like an old man with a comb over! And her tail is about an 1/8th of what it should be. I could never show her in this state, she would be laughed out of the ring! But yet her legs and body is coming back.

I have a shedding double coated GSD long haired.
I use a vacuum cleaner on him weekly with a furminator copy product, through shedding time.
Weekly brush out.

Ive had a jumper made up from one of my softer haired dogs, what i ended up with was a jumper that always smelt of my dog, and itched like hell.
Nice.

you cant use a furminator on a TM. next year I am going to save her fur and have it spun. I think a scarf would be my limit for wearing dog fur. lol.

Yah, I think a scarf is about my limits. Anything else I'd have to have someone else do it.

And yah, furminators don't work well with these coats, it did ok on Apollo's lower legs, but the higher up the longer and thicker the fur gets till it basically stops working.

it also cuts the fur rather than gets to the base which is what is needed with these guys. you need to get it all out from the skin up and a rake is your best friend. furminator is wrong as leaves the undercoat against the body which can cause problems. it needs to come out as much as it breaks your heart and they look like mongrels! lol.

Wow, I've read that TMs need a lot of grooming, but I had no idea they shed that much!

It reminds me of my old akita... when she blew her coat, she'd have little white patches everywhere. Looked like she'd been studded with cotton balls. :p My parents would make me take her out in the backyard to brush her when I got home from school. If it was a breezy day, there would be piles of fuzz drifting across the yard and piling up against the fence! :D It was a good thing I enjoyed doing it, or it would've been quite an ordeal.

This year's shed has been unusual. Everyone I've talked to with TMs has agreed. Usually its a couple months of shedding and they're done and you're back to weekly brushing. But this year, Apollo started loosing coat right before Easter.....and he's STILL shedding, AND growing back in the new coat now.

MM, can't quite, but Apollo's suddenly getting close......

Yep that looks familiar. Moo's trousers up near her butt are still throwing. At this rate I wont even be able to show her at out club autumn show!

Here they're not SUPPOSED to be penalized for showing in summer coat, but you can bet that if he's being compared to a dog who's NOT doing this weird shed/grow cycle that the other dog is going to show better. dammit. I WAS hoping to hit a show mid Augest, but considering the insanely hot summer I changed my mind on that one. Glad I did. Hopefully he'll be done with this by the end of Sept when the next show I want to hit is!

You would hope so but there is no way in hell I would put Mooshi up against a 12 or 18 month old that hasn't blown their coat yet or certainly not blown it as bad as she has! This is the first year she has gone to this extreme. I wonder how long its going to take to grow back??!!
