Any welders here?

I am not a welder, but have a welding question(s). Currently I cannot get Maury my Neo to crate train. I boarded him with my vet for a couple of days and had my other mastiff Sasha (CC) to be put in with him. When returned for them, I was told they had no problems with either of them when they were together. So naturally I want a crate big enough for the both of them here at the house.

Here are my questions:
  1. How large should I get it made? Neither one will grow any taller, but Maury will possibly gain 40-50 more pounds.
  2. What gauge metal should I ask for?
  3. Should I ask for coated/painted metal?
  4. What would be a fair price for it?
Thanks for any and all help in this.

DH is a Fitter. He's been welding since he was a teenager. I just texted him and he said that steel would be cheapest and he'd look at powder coating. He said that he wouldn't touch the welding for less than $200. Just the welding. Not designing it, designing the door and closures, etc. He also said he didn't know how much powder coating would be. I also don't think that would include a tray. I think he's thinking the size of the crate our EM has - so whatever dimensions a giant crate are, so most likely 54x35x45.

I missed the window to edit. The worrier in me has to say that I'd be concerned about crating two together when I'm not home. I know they get along well now, but things can happen. There. I just had to say it. Wishing you the best of luck.

Have you looked at Southern states/tractor store or Lowes/Home Depot? They have chain link fence "kennels" for small dogs for outside. They are about 4 feet tall and 6 or 8 feet in length. You might be able to configure some of those panels to meet your needs. Panels come with doors that might be big enough. Use a side panel for the top.

Luckily, Max loves his box (crate) but it really looks small though it is the biggest you can buy. He gets in all the time, even when he doesn't have to. When he stands up, there is only about an inch or two to the top.
