Agility

Angus at agility. This was the first class out of 6. We worked A LOT on focus as he is dog reactive and this is a group class. It's a required course for me as I'm currently in school to become a professional dog trainer. Angus is the dog I'll be using for all of my practical coursework, so he's going to be learning a ton with me.

So exciting! I think you'll be a fantastic dog trainer. Great photos - hope it isn't as hot there as it is here right now!

Thank you! I have been learning sooooo much. I feel like my head is going to explode.

Our summer has actually been very mild this year! I think today was only 26°.

We already are! Strangley enough, his favourites seemed to be the Pause Table and the A-Frame, lol. He's such an odd ball.

Lillie really likes the A-Frame, the dog walk and the teeter. She does not like jumps at all, and will walk over them if at all possible...

I so wish we could've met up while you were in Calgary. Next time for sure we are going to get the pups together for a play date.

I have the jumps set super low for Angus because of his knee, so he pretty much just walks over them, lol. I'm not sure that I'll allow him to do the dog walk because of his knee. I have heard that a lot of dogs freak out and will fall off, or jump off. I'm kind of paranoid about yet another knee injury. It's just a fun agility class, not anything competitive, so they are allowing me to pick and choose which equipment Angus uses. The primary basis is for me to be able to eventually teach a fun agility class... not so much about Angus having fun and using all the equipment, lol.

I know! Next time! The UK9BG PSA club is our "sister club." So, we will probably head out there again sometime just to spend the weekend training with them. It helps our dogs to work with different decoys in different settings on different fields... Come trial time, it isn't such a shock to them. So, there will definitely be more opportunities to get together for some play dates!

Yep, Lillie has low jumps because she's still young. I really feel like, for the big dogs, they are like "jump over what? this bar I can step over?" It just doesn't make sense to them... In our first few sessikns they substituted a board set on blocks just about 6 inches off the ground for the dog walk. You might like that with Angus? The dog walk makes me nervous, too. But I found with Lillie, she doesn't move too fast so she's not flying across it and she looks perfectly straight ahead. With Yogi, I worry more, we haven't gotten the actual dog walk for him yet, but he's so food motivated and focused on me, I'm afraid one wrong move on my part and he'll step right off the dang thing...

The board 6 inches off the ground is a great idea! I would feel so much better with something like that.

Then you have dogs like Jiggers who choose to jump off the side. The first time he went over it at full height he stopped, looked down and then jumped off. He was really proud of himself too until he realized that I wasn't happy. He did it again a few classes later when I was trying to get some distance instead of being close to him the whole way. I stopped part way and he jumped off as soon as he realized it. But then again I own a crazy dare devil dog.

I can feel my heart drop just thinking about my dog jumping off like that! We were on a walk yesterday and came upon a retaining wall so I asked Yogi to get up there and walk it, which he did, but then I guess he was done with that so he just jumped off onto the paved sidewalk. I think it was about 6 inches lower than a dog walk. I was worried mostly cause he jumped to pavement and not grass; I even support my dogs jumping out of the back of my car into pavement. But he was just fine and looked at me like what's the hold up? Let's go!

I would scream and then faint, lol.

If you think Jiggers behavior on the dog walk was scary don't ask about the teeter. That freaked out everybody who was there. It also was something I should have foreseen as it was something similar that made me decide to try him in agility.
