I specify ladies because I don't think most guys really notice stuff like this, but any gentlemen are free to reply if they so desire.
My neighbor is an older lady. She's of the opinion that certain things are a big no-no for ladies "of a certain age." No long hair, no leggings, no footwear of a particular type. It's clear she must feel I'm at that "certain age" now that I'm 45 because she's been making little comments. I generally never give a thought to what other people think about what I wear or how I look, yet here I am wondering about this. I dress in what's comfortable to me and what I like.
Was rereading this thread. I remember when we had a new hire start at my work. She is very much your opinionated on what is correct and proper church lady. Immediately after starting, she started with the little comments on our office admin's dress style. They are close to the same age, mind you. Within the first week, she told our admin "I can help you with your clothing, hair and make-up if you want. I don't mind at all." Our admin sweetly replies "No thanks, I don't like that slutty Mary-Kay look, really." Took care of Mrs. Church lady once and for all. Win.
