About Boerboels

Some people are confused about the origins of the Boerboel and how it has been managed so I thought I would post a few Vids and jot down my take on the breed.

After my short time researching the breed I find it to be a wonderful dog very in tune with it's owners loving and protective. Very intelligent to the point of you might think it will start talking to you at any second.
They don't like who they don't know right off the bat but they do love the attention they get even from those that they don't like. I found that if a stranger looks my Boerboel in the eyes for more than a brief moment she will correct them for their mistake. But allow that same person to pet her just not on the top of her head. This Boerboel is what is considered to be the guardian type. She is thick and hard with a very blocky head and shape but don't be mistaken by her bulk 130 lbs 25 inches tall I have seen her flat jump straight up 4 feet high and running flips at about 5 feet off the ground. She recently even bloodied up a pair of coyotes that made the mistake of jumping our fence. They did get away with their lives though.
This would be Jade the unknown, Her mother is a Centurion Kennels BB and her father is a Boerboel of unknown parentage.

Then there is another type of Boerboel. He is very hound like tall slender, lean fast as lightening and able to run for miles at a time. This is the farm dog type of Boerboel. I don't have much experiance with them but I have one that is just 4.5 months old he is about 75/80 Lbs 22 inches tall. He is a lover very soft loves to eat and avoids confrontation. But he is still a baby this would be Authentic Boerboel Odinson-Thor (Phoenix of Mizpah) We can just call him Odi.

Some historical info about how the breed came about

I also gathered a couple links of interviews with one of the officers of the first Boerboel organization and he talks about color and temperament. And how the original dogs thought to be black were really just dark brindles, what we now call Ultra Brindle.

An interview with Kobus Rust, ex-chairman of SABT, initial selector of foundation dogs, senior appraiser and early Boerboel breeder regarding his involvement with Boerboel breeding.
Explains about the "Black" Boerboel being brindle dogs. @1:35 Kobus explaines he joined the SABT about 3 years after it was formed @4:28 member 340.

I will continue to add more info I find relevant here if no one minds.

The Bullmastiff was also used to guard mines in South Africa back in the day!
How much of the BM mix is presented in the blocky BB of today?

There are some that say there is a heavy influence of the BM in the guardian type of BB and some that will deny it all together, but it is visually obvious that the BM has been use from the start.

"In 1938 the real Bull Mastiff was imported to South Africa by De Beers to guard the diamond mines.) It is also known that they imported a champion obtained from the Hottentots, who played a role in the development of the Boerboel"

Lucas van der Merwe (RIP) was part of the founding fathers of the breed and member #3 in SABT he had a vision for the Boerboel and started the Mizpah Boerboel Kennel at Mizpah farm in South Africa. He was very passionet about the breed and seemed to love the odd dog. He had Piebald Boerboels and to me most importantly he had the Ultra (reverse) Brindles that he called Black Boerboels. His daughter Carin York-Hart bred dogs under him and followed his vision but due to some family health issues she was unable to stay with him at Mizpah. From what I gather he remarried and continued to breed dogs while Carin tended to her husban in his fight for life. Lucas passed away and left everything to his wife who sold the dogs or let them starve until a couple of US breeders stepped in and tried to "HELP" they ended up having to PTS some of the remaining dogs and there were 2 more I think that we don't know what happened with them. His widow had a dependancy problem and sold the kennel name to one of these US guys essentially ripping it out from under Carin's feet.

Carin is once again breeding Boerboels after her husband's remission and recovery and had to use a new Stud/Kennel name which is "Authentic Boerboels". She is producing Ultras, Fawns and regular brindles using blood from her father's Mizpah line of Boerboels. I purchased one around christmas and 3 more have been shipped to the US. We like to call my Boerboel The Phoenix of Mizpah because of the Phoenix Blaze on his chest. I hope to use him to help restore Lucas van der Merwe's line of dogs and to help better the breed overall. I believe Carin will go to court and try to recover her father's stud and kennel name and the Mizpah dogs will rise again like the Phoenix of fables.
