3 dogs die, due to being left in hot car

Very sad and very preventable. Unfortunately not a surprise if there are even parents who "forget" about their children in their cars. I just read about a dad who left his two-year old in th car when getting ready for a business trip. The mom found the baby dead at night.

I just don't understand people sometimes. Lots of times. I just saw a program about how many infants die from being left in cars. In 2016 it was something like 39. And the suggestions for not forgetting your child they suggested that as soon as you buckle yourself in you put your phone next to the car seat. Or you take off your left shoe and put that next to the car seat. Because people don't forget phones and shoes. Just kids.

Good point. In many cases I think it‘s just stupidity and underestimating the impact of heat. Not an excuse at all, I just don‘t know if it really is so much about really "forgetting".

I do think it's different for dogs than for kids. People really don't understand how quickly a car heats up, even on a relatively mild day. And lots of times people think dogs are just different. Like my neighbor, who is a really good person, but didn't think dogs ever got cold because they have fur. ???? With the kids, it does seem that it's often due to a change in routine and the kids really are just forgotten. I don't get that myself, as I was a habitual head counter. I think in the case of kids, needing to put a cell phone next to the car seat is just very sad.

As far as the children being left, I think some may be due to a change of routine. Now they have alerts you can place on your phone, which is good. I couldn't imagine the devastation a parent faces from losing a child in this way..

The crazy thing that I don't understand are the ones that intentionally leave there kids!! I remember one from last year. The 25 year old mother left her 1 year old in a running car for 6 hours to get her hair done. The car killed and the baby died. She then rode around w the dead child, looking up seizure symptoms to try to get away w it. What a shame! Even if the car wouldn't have killed, and the baby would have lived. So many horrible things could have happened. Abduction for one. And 6 hours is so long for a baby to be left unattended, strapped in a carseat...

When I was 14, I was over at a friends house. There was a house next-door that a young couple rented. They liked to party a lot. I knew the girl, cause she was 16 and we went to school together. One of her friends had 3 young kids. One was a 5 month old baby. The friend wanted to go to New Orleans, so the girl I went to school w offered to watch the kids. I thought it was a bad idea. Party Girl stayed up all night, and put the baby in a battery powered swing. I went over the next morning to check on the kids, and the baby was in the swing on the highest setting, and was screaming. I went to pick it up, and it was full of puke, urine, and feces. Soaked! I'll never forget how helpless that baby looked. It just screamed and screamed. I don't know how long it was in that swing. I really don't believe she ever took it out. I went to wake her up, and the two other kids were in the spare bedroom, and had gotten into a can of paint. They were around 2 and 3 years old. I was pissed. I went to her room and tried to wake her up. She was passed out. I even tried throwing water on her. Nothing. I didn't know what to do. I didn't want to take the kids and be charged w kidnapping, so I went to the neighbor and told her what was going on. She called the cops and went and got the kids. As the cops were there, the couple the kids belong to were coming up the drive. They saw the cop cars, turned around and fled from the scene. This is their kids, and they see cops, and run!! Instead of concern for what may have happened to their children! The cops chased them down, and the guilty couple tried to do as I feared and say that the neighbor had no right to remove their children from the babysitters home. It didn't work, and the cops got social services involved.
It amazes me how selfish people can be. Growing up, I had a lot of friends that had kids at a young age, and a lot of them mistreated their children. I love children, and it is always so hard for me to see people abuse kids.
Animals too.

What a terrible, sad story. I hope those children ended up in a better place.

When the hell are people going to understand that you cannot leave your dogs in a hot vehicle!!!!

And they seriously think a crack in the window is sufficient. We put cookie dough on a baking sheet on the dash board, and they baked. How the hell is a crack in the window gonna do anything?

Kids and pets.....never leave them alone in a vehicle. Even when it's not hot outside..anything can happen. I don't get people, I really dont.

Did you guys know that only 19 states have a law about leaving children alone in a vehicle? I learned this after we watched someone leave their infant in a car seat in their vehicle at the Gyro place down the block. They went in and must have actually eaten because that baby was alone in the car for over 45 minutes. Not once did anyone come out to check on that baby. Both my neighbor and I called the police. Apparently Indiana is one of the states that has no laws covering children left unattended in cars. How messed up is that?

There are 28 states that have laws about leaving animals unattended in vehicles/rescuing animals in vehicles.

I was not aware of this! How awful. Why wouldn't they have laws against leaving kids in cars! It's neglect. You did the right thing even if the law refused to. It's actually sad that we have to have such laws, it should be common sense not to leave kids alone in a vehicle. Especially babies, and for what? to eat a gyro?!!,It burns me up. Now my girls are old enough to sit w the younger girls while I run into the store. ( only a few minutes) But before they were old enough, I even took them all in with me to pay for gas. I NEVER left them. I would go in w one on the hip and all of them holding hands, just to pay for gas. And yes, it was inconvenient. But it would be more inconvenient if someone jumped in my running car and drove off w my babies.

The thing is, the police didn't actually tell us that it wasn't a law. He called and we waited. Then I called and we waited. When they didn't show up, and the people finally came out and drove away, I went inside and did the research myself. If we had known that the police weren't going to go down there, we would have gone and confronted them ourselves.

Its law here now that if you see a dog in a car in heat distress we can break the window to get the dogs out,
I just wish owners would think, its like putting there dogs in a oven and turning it on, weve put air conditioning units in our vehicles for when we travel so if we get stuck in traffic the boys are ok.

This is just awful.... I don't know if people don't think or just don't care... just a couple weeks back a man left an infant in a hot car and the child died because of it.

This also reminds me about the time I left Sunny in the car at the gym during a cold snap in the winter. It was like -25c / -13f during the day.... I had stopped at the gym on my way home from work. My routine work out is 20 minutes. So by the time I'm done and out back to my car it's 30 to 40 minutes.

So I'm in there like 15 minutes. Then I hear oventhe PA my plate number and that my dog is freezing to come to my car or they will break the window.

Oh I was pissed....I had Sunny in a winter parka dog coat and I left my winter parka.... plus I have my auto starter in my car and had my timer set to remind me to start my car in 20 minutes.... When a stranger approaches Sunny she shakes.....
So I go out to my car check in Sunny who was all snuggled up. When I checked her body core she was nice and toasty warm.....So I go back into the gym and speak to the creeper who was going to "rescue" my Sunny.... yes I was really pissed.... I asked him if he had approached my car and try to talk to Sunny the young man said yes and that when he tapped on my window to check to see if she was still alive that's when he witnessed Sunny shaking......Of course I kinda let him have it...Told him that any dog that was woken up by a stranger would react like this and I would appreciate him leaving my dog alone.....

Yes I was extremely pissed thinking how dare he assume I would leave my dog to freeze....I was so pissed that 24 hours later when I want back to work out I was still pissy..... of course I left Sunny at home this day.......just before walked into the gym it hit me....

That young man was just worried about Sunny.....he wasn't accusing me of being a bad pet owner.....he didn't know he was the reason Sunny was shaking so much....he was just worried about my pup.....he had no idea how long Sunny had been in that car at that moment.
So I spotted him working out.
I walked over to speak to him....I told him just how upset I was..... he tells me he was just worried about the dog. I told him I do realize that he was just worried about my fur baby and I thanked him for going the extra distance in trying to find the owner.... He told me that normally when he sees a dog in a car he minds his own business, but for the last couple really cold days this other dog owner with a pick up had been leaving his Box terrier with no coat or blanket in the truck for hours....he did report this person to the gym but the guy didn't seem to care.

I thanked him for his concern and actions to make sure my fur baby was ok.

I walked away from this young man thinking how grateful there were caring people in the world like him.

Sheila, I think it's admirable that you put your self in the young man's shoes, and realized he was only looking out for Sunny. :) and to go to him and say so, shows that you have tremendous fortitude.
