11 week old pup shivering outside

Hello everyone!

Its been very cold here in Pa going down to 6 degrees in the evening. Yesterdays high was 21 degrees. We have two Kangal (Anatolian Shepherd) puppies 9 months old and 5 large poodles. These dogs don't mind the cold and even play in the snow for hours. They have a dog door so they can let themselves in and out and most of their time is outside.

Our 11 week old dane wants to be outside with them. However after a few minutes outside begins to shiver so we bring him in. He is wearing 2 sweaters. I read somewhere that danes lack a subcutaneous fat layer so they get cold easily.

What has been your experience with your dane being outside in the cold?

Thanks and God Bless, Alexus

Our dane/lab mix pup was the first we ever had to get a jacket for... so, I think there may be something to that.
He did better as he got older, but as a puppy, he'd wear a sweater if it was under 50F outside.

I think puppies also don't do cold as well, so him being so young might be adding to the issue, too.

My Dane is the first dog that I have bought a coat for. I have a heavy fleece jacket that he wears if we are outside more than a couple minutes (I am in northern NJ) and when he sleeps as his room is on the colder side for the house. We heat with a wood stove and he literally lives in front of the stove when he is not moving around. He has claimed the spot and only gets up when we move him to add more wood. Get a good thick fleece jacket. Maybe the sweater material is not holding the warmth. When the pup gets bigger buy foal coats, they are much cheaper than XXXL dog coats.

Thank you for the advice! I like the idea of a foal coat.
Your dane is beautiful.
