Cane corso skin rash & hair loss

Hi, I'm looking for advice. My 3 year old Cane Corso developed a lumpy red rash on his hind legs & groin in January and also hair loss. He was licking it alot, tried natural anti itch/medicated shampoo but ended up at the vet as it was getting worse. The vet seemed to think it was an allergic reaction to flea bite and he was put on 2 weeks of antibiotics, steroids and antihistamine. It cleared up completely. It started to reappear last week and is getting worse by the day. We can't get an appointment for the vet until next week but wondered if there was anything I could do in the meantime. I'm trying to upload pictures but it's saying too large. It's started as small red bumps which then become large scales and then fall off along with the hair. Thanks

Hi Claire- I’m certainly not a Vet and others on the thread may be able to help in better detail but it looks similar to what my Boerboel had at 6 months. She was and still is extremely allergic to any chicken by-products. Food, treats, bones etc. Did the Vet recommend exploring his diet? It might be a question to ask next week at your appointment. There is a Benadryl chart for dog/weight ratio. Call your Vet and find out what you can give him in the meantime for relief. We did that for our girl until we could get our appointment. Hope this helps and please keep us posted.

Thanks for your reply. I do think its an allergy, the vet seemed to think it was to a flea bite. I'm going to feed him completely raw for the moment and see if it helps and will look up the benadryl chart too thanks. Would it be common for dogs to develop food allergies suddenly? He's never had anything like this prior to January.

Hi and welcome,
Yes they can suddenly get allergies, my boys cant have any sort of kibble or treat thats got chicken in, or grain.
Have you walked in any areas that she couldve brushed against anything thats caused it.

That looks very like my daughter's boy that has severe allergies. She uses a special shampoo for him. Miconahex? Maybe? She also has Chlorhexidine wipes that she uses on his belly, "armpits", and other problem spots. Her boy is on allergy shots that help, but certain times of the year he still has flare ups and she uses the wipes and shampoo to help control it. I don't think either need a prescription, and while I don't think it would hurt anything you should check with your vet before trying it.

I'll look into them thanks. I washed him with hibiscrub yesterday and its not looking as raw so will see if that helps and will look into getting those wipes. He got large lumps and raw between his toes 2 years ago after a holiday by the beach but it cleared after a few days of apple cider vinegar and coconut oil. Thanks for your help

We walk in the mountains & forests so lots of long grass but we always do that so not sure if that's it. Something to consider anyway thanks
