New TM to our family

I am truly enjoying the community here, and scouring the posts for morsels of info.
We have a 5 year old Giant Malamute, and just got a TM puppy after recently losing our 15 year old mix. It is fun to see how similar and then different he is from Sophie/Mal. He has a more open multi-family member heart, where as Sophie was aloof at that age and has always been "my" dog. But wow, tell Odin/TM not to do something, and I feel like my grandfather just scolded me with his look. Fun times coming!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I really appreciate the information here that confirms some of what we're anticipating dealing with. (Terrible teens for example) Also the discussion about things we hadn't thought of yet....
Does anyone here use a vet insurance plan? We discussed it with our vet and the tendency for larger breed dogs to have orthopedic issues later in life... they advised comparing plans closely. Some have breed specific exclusions, or rates that rise yearly, or healthy check reimbursements.
Would love any input!

Welcome. One of my parents friends has a giant malamute, he's a wonderful dog.
I do have insurance for my guys, Trupanion. Unfortunately I have had to use it when my EM required surgery for elbow dysplasia. I agree that you want to check the fine print, there are restrictions and requirements for complete coverage.
For me insurance gave/gives me peace of mind that if anything goes wrong I won't have to make a decision on treatment based on what I can afford. Kryten's surgery (1 leg only) was $6000-$7000. My cost was ~$2000.

I don't have insurance, I recommend instead setting up a savings account specifically for animal related problems and putting money into it regularly. Cause yes, there's all sorts of restrictions, INCLUDING not covering things soley because the dog isn't spayed or neutered!

save yourself if you are discipline. Why pay them for the what if when you can save and use your money only if the what if occurs. Remember insurance is a business and fine print sucks.

I've always wanted and Alaskan Malamute. Beautiful dogs, you have. Also, the insurance companies require you to have the plan for a year before they will cover any of the dysplasia's(hip or elbow). I know from experience, as you will see when I post my next thread about my eight month old TM.
