Help me figure out what breed to get next

Well considering I have already planned Mateo's rescue......;)

I live in Illinois. Energy wise I do not have a preference either way. I have a fenced yard for them to play in and we do go for walks.

Do DDBs train easily? I am used to stubborn with mystic, rotties and dobes. And oh yeah my 3 kids are beyond stubborn. lmao
Of course, I am going to push for a DDB pup...:biggrin2:

Part clown, part protector, and all sweet love bug. Of course, a lot of mastiffs will fit that description...

What type of energy are you looking for? And I forgot where you live--- is it hot year round? Might be hard on the DDB.

But, they are very good with children, patient, steady temperament- but with a willfullness/stubborness that is hard to surpass, LOL.

And....did I mention how sweet they are?!

Thank you for kind words. George was 6 when he passed.

If I could decide on what breed. lol

No it's not.. Ours was 10 months and not long after Christmas. Hopefully you'll settle on that pup that's just right for you soon

With young kids who you can potentially expect to bring home lots of friends, and (IIRR) a home based business that has people in and out regularly......you'll probly want to stay away from the harder tempered dogs IMO. A TM only if they're a softer dog for example.

I'm very in love with the CC. I have a pit and my husband has a bull dog/boxer mix. My CC is def my top favorite.

(Yeah...we're building our bunker, LOL)

Mateo, surprisingly, was pretty easy to train. In fact, he's got an excellent "heel" that he picked up fast (and I thought it would be hard for him to grasp); I don't use it every day, but I am grateful that he goes into a heel if I need him to.

His recall is pretty good--- but I always have to say it twice. After the first "come" command, he just looks up at me and decides whether it's worth it or not to comply. I call him again, and comes barreling towards me like a torpedo, LOL. Every time...

IIRR???

I don't have a home based business. We do own a business but it is not run out of our home.

I'm in IL too but several hours away I think. :) I love bullmastiffs - didn't see you mention them. I think they also meet your criteria. Mario loves to go out for walks, hiking, etc when we have time ... But my house isn't wrecked/chewn to bits if we don't. He's def got protective instincts- but will sit on us or in front of us if someone comes in the house he's not expecting.

I am pretty much open to the idea of any mastiff honestly. As long as it is a good fit in my home. Do you know how they are w kids? Mine are 2,6 and 8

I am in northern IL by Rockford.

I have heard that BM are pretty good protectors.

OMG- he's amazing with kids- my 3 are 6, 4.5, & 3. :) we got him last year at 8 wks old. He's also pleasant with other kids that come over. He will sit outside & watch the kids play the entire time. ;) I really think they are a great family dog that can be protective when needed. I wanted a bigger dog cause my husband runs our family restaurant, so works late... Very popular place in town - everyone knows when he's at work. Now everyone knows we have a big ol' bullmastiff too. :)

As long as you do the proper training/socialization and then proofing of the dog's obedience and understand dog body language and how to communicate effectively and not humanize a dog and have a variety of training methods in your toolbox and tricks up your sleeve, I think you will be fine. Practice loose leash walking :p

We own a tattoo business so my hubby is gone till about midnight every night so I understand that.

And with Mystic and her back i am sure that she is enough to scare people away. lol But she is just a giant bag of mush. lol

That is why I will not own a Fila until either I move to the country or my boys are grown. :( I think living where I do would A. stress the dog out B. with my kids being young I am scared that I maybe doing something and they bring a friend in and a HORRIBLE accident would occur.

Just keep in mind that you'll have to crate/seperate the Fila when theres strangers over......
