Moving

So we're in the midst of moving. We are moving to this house, which is a rental.

The deal is that we get super cheap rent and as long as the landlord supplies the materials, we will do the labour to fix the place up.

The house is a disaster, but I think it'll be a really fun adventure. I've always wanted to learn how to renovate houses, so what better way to learn than on a house that isn't mine?! We have a close friend who does this for a living that is guiding/mentoring us.

The previous tenants tried using particleboard and OSB as subfloor. So, my task today was tearing out the flooring down to the original plywood subfloor.

Please, wear N95 masks and gloves when removing all that stuff. The chemicals, mildew, mold and all things really "old" can cause health problems that you don't find out about until years later. Use shop vac to get all the dust and particals up. Spray bleach solution in suspicious areas to kill off any mold/weird things growing. Good luck! It's hard work Re-building a house.

That type of deal can work out really well! When my family first moved back to WI from the East Coast my parents found a house that was in pretty bad shape, but the owner wanted it repaired. My dad is a home builder, so he did all the work in exchange for rent. I think we lived there for about a year rent free. Good luck!

Yes! We are definitely keeping ourselves safe. :)

Thanks! I have a good feeling about it. :)

Wow. I can tell you that I hated living through a Reno. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm pretty low maintenance when it comes to where I live. It doesn't take much to keep me happy. If there was a toilet and kitchen cupboards, I'd be happy enough to just live in it the way it is, haha. It'll be hectic, but that's life.

Have you checked for/removed any mold?

Yes. :) There was a lot of mold in the bathroom. Everything was gutted and removed. The leak was found and fixed. :)

There was also damage to the floor joists, which was all fixed/brand new floor joists. We cut out all of rotten subfloor and replaced it with brand new, too. The last tenant really fucked things up... He let a leak in the fridge go unchecked, which ruined the floors.

The flooring and subfloor will also be removed from what will be my bedroom. The door the old tenant put in wasn't the right size, so there was a big gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, so water got in and wrecked the floors in there as well.

here we have a pretty big problem with houses that have been trashed by tenants - usually they use them as p labs, so if the house is found to be contaminated it will be demolished (at the landlord's expense of course). If not tested, the new people moving in don't know why they get sick after couple of years. I tested every house we lived in, including the ones I own...

Looking forward to following your adventure. We've done a ton of renos to our own house, family places, friend's places... Somehow I've ended up living in a perpetual state of projects underway...which will be lovely, when they're done....

Yikes, that is brutal! :( The back shed (which will be the new chicken coop) was clearly used as a grow-op at one time. Lots of big venting, soil etc... Luckily, that doesn't pose a health risk.

I'll be happy once the house is livable. Everything else can be a work in progress and we can slowly work on the more cosmetic things like paint.Lumber was delivered today, so we can put in the new subfloor. My mom also just redid all the flooring in her house and os giving us 600+ sq feet of laminate flooring, so that is a huge help. Also, new doors and frames were delivered. Landlord is picking up kitchen cabinets today and will be ready for installation tomorrow. Yippee! Progress.

You guys are renovating at light speed compared to us! Awesome! We re-did my brother's Tear'er Down'er (not really a fix'er Up'er) when he was serving overseas with the forces. Found out I have mad drywalling muddling/sanding skills, but that floor tiling is not my strong point. (p.s. Dark wood floors show every hair from every dog...just say nope, nope, nope)
