Freshwater tanks

Current hobby other than Hector the butthead are freshwater tanks. Only have two 40 gals and one 20 gal right now.

Clown loaches and silver dollar are shown, there are others in the tank.



In a separate tank are wild caught jewel cichlid pair, hemichromis fasciatus. They are mean, territorial, and very aggressive. They will fight each other and will eat the eyes and guts of their tankmates. These two juveniles have paired up somehow, so they are in their own tank and hopefully they will breed when they mature.

I used to have a 150 gallon freshwater tank with giant Oscars. They were named George and Gracie and they ate raw meat and we could pet them. They died after a few years and we sold the tank. It just got to be too much work.

Now, Franklin is the only hobby I have time for.

For years I used to ride horses. I mainly rode English & did some jumping but towards the last few years that I was riding I mainly just rode for fun. I'm thinking about getting back into it & maybe getting another horse. I miss it.

I used to have a 150 gallon freshwater tank with giant Oscars. They were named George and Gracie and they ate raw meat and we could pet them. They died after a few years and we sold the tank. It just got to be too much work.

Now, Franklin is the only hobby I have time for.

I heard oscars have a lot of personality, but they are messy eaters and need water changes often because of that. I would love a 150 gal tank.

It's very fun & relaxing! I seemed to have never fell out of the horse loving phase. I swear one day I'll have a Clydesdale. Those & Paints are my favorite

Wow! The clydes are so regal looking. What about those um persherons? My co-worker talked about those horses all the time because she had 2 of those. I bet owning horses cost A LOT of $$$$.

I'm sorry, but I don't know why I always laugh when I hear about the hole in the head. I know it's probably not a pretty sight. They ate raw meat and tolerated pettings, hmm lol it does sound like little dogs in a tank. Probably less stressful too when you had to go somewhere. Did you see that one video where an oscar jump out of the tank and bit someone on the nose LOL and hung on?

I like dwarf cichlids too, but they are just too tiny!

Wow! You have some awesome tanks. I love the decor in them. Where did you get the driftwood?

The driftwood is collected from the local river and bay, and some of it is Mopani wood or Malaysian wood that I get from other hobbyists in trade, or get on Ebay, or sometimes at the fish store, though it is usually too pricey there. Craig's List has been a really good resource for aquarium stuff. My 150-gal I got on CL for $300, including the tank, stand and hood, plus some supplies. I didn't pay much more for the 125, which included the tank, stand and hood (I don't use the hood on this tank) plus 2 giant canister filters, lights, gravel, etc. People forget what they pay for this stuff!

I just sold my 75 gallon tank. I loved having the fish, but I got tired of cleaning it all the time. My favorite were the African Leaf Fish.

The sap or pitch or whatever it is that evergreens have was not worth the risk. I think you have to use sandpaper on an inconspicuous area to be sure.

I considered sealing it in two-part clear epoxy (that's what I used to seal the plaster Buddha in the 125 - I was determined to put that in the tank) but I decided against it. The piece of DW is now a centerpiece on my deck table, lol.
