I do alot of writing and in writing about taking the natural approach to raising your Mastiff I ended up with the following paragraph in closing my article and just wanted to share. I have read and re-read this paragraph so many times and it is SO relevant. How many times do members come on here or other groups and post about what there vet told them, only for the other members to oppose the vets reccommendation. Not saying we shouldn't trust vets, just be smart about it. Anyway, here it is, I hope it makes at least on person 'think' about it :)

"YOU are the advocate for your dog. NOT your vet, NOT the vaccine companies, NOT the dog food companies (all profit based businesses). YOU and YOU alone are your dog’s advocate. Many vets follow what they learned in vet school 20+ years ago. Many vets follow the protocol’s set forth by the dog food companies (specifically Science Diet in many areas). Many vets don’t know there is a difference in the way you treat and medicate a giant breed vs. any other breed. Many vets don’t know the nutritional requirement for a growing giant breed, NOT the same thing as a large breed. Many vets don’t know that there are numerous Anesthesia’s’ that are unsafe for use in Mastiffs. Many vets don't know that 27 US University's now reccommend a minimal vaccine regiment for dogs. And finally, the person at the pet store is NOT qualified to give you advice as to what to feed your pet. They always try to do it, but what qualification do they have? It is YOUR job as your dog’s advocate to make sure the right decisions are being made in regards to the well-being of your family member. If your vet or anyone else is trying to bully or push you into decisions that don’t make you feel comfortable trust your instincts and find a second opinion. "

Great end to your article. I agree and wish more pet owners would educate themselves.

Amen! I've been preaching that for years now. Same holds true for MD's
I try to tell my mom not to believe everything the doc says. She says the doc says I have to do this so I do it. *scratching head* I'm the biggest researched when it comes to my family's health, my health and Titan's health.

Well said!

I had a vet try and tell me to neuter my DDB at 6 months :O I switched vets so fast...oh man. Still got my fully intact 10 months old DDB :) and love my new vet.

True for other animals & people docs as well. I won't go into my long health story, but I did have to educate my previous vet about cats and diabetes. Once I had educated myself that is. My cat lived several years with food controlled diabetes, no insulin, before dying for other reasons. He was my introduction to researching optimal pet health.

I so very agreed with you.many people try to tell you what is best and they never even owned a giant breed . Two thumbs up good job saying this.

+1

I overheard this one: I paid for the Doc to tell me what to do, I'd look stupid if I then didn't do it.

alwcm4-- Perfectly stated. Do you mind if I share this on a Natural Rearing Forum I belong to? With giving you credit--if you don't mind?
