While I'm Away

So I am at work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Today I came home to find that my CC ate my drywall. What can I do to keep him busy while I am at work?

Get him a can of spackle and a trowel and let him know you expect those holes patched up before you get home.
And there had better be two coats of paint on that wall.

I try and get up early enough to give Trixie quality time. I try and wear her out before I leave, she also has about 4 chew toys laying around. I on the other hand had a CC who destroyed a couch before! That's why I try and get her out for a walk or at time outside before I leave

A good walk before you leave... a dog walker that comes in the middle of the day for a walk & potty break... and then some more playtime together when you get home.

Maybe one day a week send him to doggie day care (if he's the social type).
Otherwise, joining an agility club or some other good outdoor activity in the evenings or even on the weekends might help during the week, too.

Some other thoughts that might help:
Hide treats all over the house, so he's searching more than destroying.
Give him a good fully stuffed kong before you leave.
Make sure there are 2 or 3 safe chew toys in the room (antlers are a current favorite)
Leave a tv or radio on for something to listen to.
Leave some window blinds open near a dog bed so he can watch he 'hood.
Spray the walls with bitter apple or spread with vicks to make them less tasty.

You can always confine him to a crate if he's still destructive... we have the 54" mondo/condo sized crate. Denna has just recently (about 2 months now) been able to have free reign in the house. Most of the time she retires to the bedroom until we get back, but sometimes she sits in the front window and watches cars and people pass by. She's 20 months old now.

How old is your CC? The older they get, the less bored with being home alone they should be... "should"...
Good luck!

He turned 1 on October 20. He doesn't have free reign of the house, we confine him with a baby gate to our back room, which is about 5' x 8'. I really don't want to resort to crating him while we are at work, I feel like that is just putting a band-aid on it. I would prefer to get to the root of the problem or provide him with something to do while we are away.

I have to agree with Deena's Mom - it sounds like he's bored with an abundance of energy. Your challenge is to drain his energy and get his mind working.

Some of the things we do/have done:

- My "kids" go to daycare for 6 hours Mondays and Wednesdays - so their energy has been drained.

- On non day care days, we walk every morning before I go to work. But they are not sniffing meandering walks (those are for the afternoon). We do a pack walk where they are focused on moving forward as a group. We also stop and do some obedience practice throughout the walk. For Zeek who's about 20 mos old and has a fair amount of puppy energy, I have been known to put a backpack on him with weights in to (no more than 10 to 12%) of his body weight. (You can make one side of the backpack slightly heavier than the other to keep them working on keeping it all balanced.)

-When we get home from our walk, I feed them. Zeek I feed out of a puzzle feeder.

We do walk then eat as it taps into their natural biological rhythms of hunt, eat, sleep. (I don't know if it's true or not but I can tell you that mine crash out and sleep for at least four hours.)

- When I can, I come home at lunch and either take them for a short walk or play in the backyard. Then we feed lunch and then again, they are crashed until I get home.

If you can't come home at lunch, can you get someone to take them out for play or a walk or even just drop off a Kong with lunch frozen inside. If you can't get/or don't want someone in your house, you can get automatic Kong dispensers that will drop Kongs at specified intervals.

Just some thoughts. :)

He's bored. He needs lots of exercise before you leave and when you return. A tired pup is a good pup. Leave him mental stimulating toys. Kongs with frozen treats, frozen wash cloths, ice cubes with treats frozen in the middle.

I agree with most on this thread. Exhaust his energy, physically as well as mentally. And crate. The crate is not meant as a bandaid but rather a place for him to develop routine while you are away. As long as he's getting all the exercise and discipline he needs, a crate is not cruel. It's home.
