Sometimes I don't feel like training... sometimes days go by and I think, "crap, Yogi and I haven't done anything". But today I was reminded of why all those hours put into training matter in more than a "nice" dog, more than fun videos of our accomplishments and certificates after completing a class and titles and kudos.
We came home from Yogi's therapy visit this morning and I had my hands full when I opened the back of the HHR to let him out. He does wait to get out, so I scanned the road and the driveway before I released him as I knew I wouldn't have his leash in my hand. He's not a bolter or a runner, so no big deal, I didn't see any dogs or cars or anything.
What I failed to see was the buck who was standing stock still after we pulled in right in the yard about 20 feet away... Yogi saw him before I even opened the door to release him and when the buck bolted, so did Yogi. I yelled "Yogi COME" and sure as shit that dog turned on a dime about halfway across the neighbor's yard and came back... He turned to look a couple times, like "really do I have to?" but he DID. Thank Goodness!
