When to start private training?????

Hello everyone!! We are getting our new female in about 3 weeks and I was just wondering if anyone had any info on when to start our private home training? We are going to take her to puppy kindergarten classes when she is good on her shots but I have heard some people say that you should start having your trainer come over the day that you get your puppy and I have heard other people says that you should start between 10-14 weeks. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

At 8 or 9 weeks, 5 to 10 min sessions of training are best. I'm assuming your private trainer would be staying for longer than that so I'd wait a couple weeks. However I would give her a couple days to settle in then start doing several 5-10 minute sessions a day with her myself.

the puppy kindergarten is really just for socialization. I have never had a private trainer come to my home with a pup. I prefer finding a good trainer and doing classes so my dogs learn to listen and work under distractions. Corso for the most part are easy to train, they want to learn. I suggest you talk to your breeder and see what they say in regards to this question. Personally I do short fun training stints in the home with my pups, teach them the basics and do outside classes. If I was going to have a private in home trainer I would probably wait until 5-6 months. But again that depends, what exactly are you wanting to do with your pup?

we are basically just doing obedience training, canine good citizen training, agility, and off leash training. I am also going to have her be a therapy dog around our area.

Awesome! My female is a working therapy dog and I do agility with my male :) Good luck with her and I look forward to seeing your accomplishments.

I personally have never used a private trainer. I do training classes in obedience, etc., just to have my dog get used to doing the things we work on at home in a situation with other dogs/distractions. I have never had a dog that had an issue that I could not work out on my own (maybe I have just been lucky). I really believe that you should work with your dog yourself to create that bond, and I would only consider a personal trainer for a serious problem I could not solve on my own, or for some specialized training that you need help with :)
