When to get rabies shot?

My vet says rabies at 4 months, my breeder says she likes to wait until they're six months. Thoughts?

Also, Vader will be 15 weeks by the time he is finished with his third set of shots. Do I need to wait until then to start training? We were going to do one on one, but go to the training place? Also when can I take him on my grass? (He is the only dog)

Thanks!

What is your local legal requirement for when dogs get rabies?

Assuming that the local laws will allow you to do so my personal preference is a minimum of 4 weeks after his last puppy shot.

For socialization and training please read here: conflicting advice on puppy socialization??? But I highly recommend a puppy CLASS, rather than a one on one, for the initial "training" which honestly is as much about socialization as it is training.

Like you, I would have prefered waiting until 6 months of age, but Texas state laws say all animals must be vaccinated against Rabies by 4 months of age, and then vaccinated again 1 year later. After that, we're only required to vaccinate every 3 years. Not sure where you are located, but I would check with your state laws just to be safe.

Spartacus will be coming up on his 4th sets of shots and In south Texas they have told us the same thing, 4 months.

We just went with the vet's schedule... probably loaded her up with too many vaccines at once, but she handled them fine as far as we can tell. We might try going with titres in the future to avoid over-vaccinating if we can.

As for training - that already started the day you brought him home! He's learning what's expected through your everyday interactions. :)

But seriously, check out all the local training places and see if there is a puppy play-group in your area. They make sure all the puppies are at the same level in vaccinations and should supervise play-time so your puppy can start to learn appropriate play and how to read other dog's signals (bites too hard, plays too rough, not interested in wrestling, etc.). Depending on your level of experience, a puppy class might be good, they also include social/play time. For formal obedience type classes, you'll want to wait until they're more mature and able to focus more (age will vary with the puppy) - and the trainer will probably require a level of vaccinations that make waiting a requirement, anyway.

Gregory5 16 weeks is the proper time to give your puppy his Rabies shot. I finished at 15 weeks with the boosters and waited for a week to give my girl her Rabies. In Texas there are strict rules about the administration of the Rabies shot. The boosters have more to do with the presence and disappearance of Maternal antibodies and the development of a puppy's own immune system...so there is more wiggle room with dates when each puppy's first booster is not set for a particular age. It should be! As far as training...It's never too early to train...but you may find that the older your puppy is...the better Vader will be as far as an attention span...
