when ordering food online......how long does a bag last you?

Hi Everyone,

We have Vader on a Earthborn Holistic (bought a 28 pound bag). I'm trying to estimate how to set up the shipping of new bags. I'm thinking every six weeks sounds about right? He is just over 21 pounds and eating 2 cups a day. What do you think?

Well, it varies a bit from kibble to kibble, but in general a one cup measure of kibble weighs between 4 to 5 ounces, so say 4.5ounces a cup. 2 cups a day means 9ounces a day, and a 28lb bag has 448 ounces, so about 49 days for a 28lb bag?

How old is Vader? Is 2 cups a day enough? I personally am going through the same process you are in trying to figure out how often to have it shipped. I ordered from Mr. Chewy online, and set it up for every 4 weeks fully knowing I might have to change it. It is an easy process to change how often you have it shipped, so I would just "guess" at what you think you need, and then take it from there. That's what I'm doing :)

We are feeding him Earthborn holistic grain free, on the bag it says 21-40 pounds to feed 1 1/4 - 2 cups a day. Maybe it depends on the food?

Yes, and although I feed the same food to my pup, she weighs more, plus I give her a bit more because she is truly hungry. I have had her long enough to realize when she really is hungry..if she's not, she just walks away from her food bowl...and I divide her food up so she's fed 3x/day. I also read on a post here (sorry, don't remember which thread it was) that when Earthborn recommends a cup, they are not talking a full 8 ounces like we might use in a measuring cup...I don't remember the exact measurement, but it was more like when they were talking a cup they were talking something like 4-6 ounces????

Its cause the 8oz measure is for liquid. If you take your standard measuring cup measure and weigh that amount of kibble its about 4-5oz in weight. Thats what they mean when they say x number of cups.

Ruth, sorry to ask you this...but you're good at this stuff, and my math skills suck....when they say 1 cup kibble on the bag, what exactly would that be in my measuring cup? (Sry...I'm embarrassed to show my ignorance here :( )

I think I answered that as you were typing lol, but that standard 8oz (1cup) measure is liquid volume 8oz, so you measure out one cup of food and weigh that to get the weight, which will vary from kibble to kibble.

Dont forget that pups require more then an adult dog, as they are growing , so use the bag as a guideline. Use your pup as a visual, if hes getting chubby cut him back a little and if he is skinny feed a bit more. if you figure 4 weeks i would order a week early just to be sure you wont run out. I live in a remote area and it is a nightmare when i come up short and cant get into town for a day or 2 to get dog food.

^ What Mountainfila said. A puppy is going to need more calories than an adult dog since they are growing.

I would not think a 28lb bag will last you 6 weeks with a growing pup. I would probably figure on buying 2 bags every 4-6wks - at least once he's a bit bigger.

My boy is 6 and goes through a big bag (28lbs or so) of Orijen 6 Fish in a little over a month (a month and a few days maybe). He gets 4 -4 1/2 cups a day on average, divided into 2 meals.

I think it also depends on where you order it from. I'm not in an remote area & when I ordered earthborn from chewy, I had it within a week. But I agree with the others, order a week in advance just in case.

I'm going through the same process of figuring out how often I need to order from chewy.

I think everyone has answered everything, but just to reiterate, when the bag says to feed two cups, they are telling you to feed two normal 8 oz measuring cups. However, because there's space between all of the kibble pieces and because the kibble may not be as dense as water, 8 ounces of kibble by volume only weighs around 4.5 ounces.

As for how much to feed him, there are two camps there. Some would feed what you're feeding him, following the guidelines on the bag. However, I would feed more. The guidelines on the bag are for an adult dog, not a growing puppy that needs more calories for growth, not just maintaining. I'm also feeding my pup adult food, so what I did was look at the guidelines listed for the same brand on their puppy food. As you can see from the link below, Earthborn Puppy recommends feeding a 21 lb pup that's 6-11 weeks 2.75 to 3.25 cups per day. The same guidelines if you scroll down recommend 1 to 1.25 for a 21 lb adult dog. There's slightly more calories per cup in the puppy food than in say Coastal Catch, so you could actually feed a little more than the recommended and still be within the calorie guidelines. As others have said, these are just guidelines. If your pup seems really hungry and looks on the thin side, bump up his food. If he starts to get a little chunky, cut back. Just remember a slow steady growth rate is better for your pups health.

Guinness is 10 1/2 months (bullmastiff) and 82lbs. He's currently going thru a ~30-something pound bag of Fromm Duck and Sweet Potato in right about 4 weeks. He gets 2 cups (scoop) twice a day. Still staying pretty lean, but starting to fill out.
