When is the best age to spay my mastiff puppy?

Some people say to wait until she is older to spay and the vet said any time after 4 months.

I've chosen to wait to neuter my EM until after he is 2. My reasons were shallow, I want him to have the bulk of the males in his line and he needs to have the testosterone to get there. With females I've heard too many cases where she suffers from urinary incontinence when she is spayed before she is 1. That combined with the fact that these breeds still have a lot of growing to do at that age would make me willing to put up with her being in heat a few times so she could get closer to her adult size.

Females atleast 18 months, males at least 2 preferably closer to 3. Vets are not always the best people to ask when it comes to the giant breeds.

Laurie, ask you vet to give you documentation supporting his decisions for your specific breed. Most vets do not have extensive experience with giant breeds and are basing their decision on "the average dog" which mastiffs are not. Years ago when I approached my vet and asked for the same, she did not have the knowledge necessary to make an informed decision about my english mastiffs. She did contact vetenary hospitals in our area that specialize in giant breeds and did extensive research for me before recommending to wait until my boys were adults. I can challenge my vet on any topic regarding my dogs and she will go above and beyond to get the answers we need. I would encourage you to seek a different vet if yours do not allow you to question their recommendations.

Thank you so much! I will talk to her on Monday and ask her to contact local vets that specialize in large breeds and then give a recommendation.
