What's the going price for top pedigree pups?

Hi,

I've been in contact with a local CC breeder (NY) that has pups (12 weeks old) from AKC Grand Champion, CGC and TDI parents. Damn, I really wanted to wait for the Spring/Summer. LOL His dogs have been shown at Westminster. Price includes cropping, docking and dewclaws and both parents are OFA certified good. He is asking $2600. I almost choked when he emailed me the price. I just started looking into this breed though. Seems like backyard breeders are asking around $1000-1500. Is the asking price fair? The breeder is Liberty Cane Corso - Cane Corso Breeder New York. Thanks

This price is fair. You get what you pay for and I have learned from experience that when you buy a large breed puppy you need to make sure you buy from a reputable breeder who health tests their dogs and offer a very good health guarantee.

I agree buying from a BYB is taking a chance that you may purchase an unhealthy pup or a pup with an unstable temperament due to bad breeding. BYB's are generally into breeding for the cash. Reputable breeders are into breeding for betterment of the breed.

You may consider checking mastiff rescues who have young pups and puppies.

Thanks guys, I didn't mean to imply I would ever buy from a backyard breeder, especially with a breed like this or any purebreed for that matter. I was just taken back by the price because we were also looking at the Bouvier de Flandres, Royal Standard Poodle and Kerry Blue Terrier with similar pedigree. All were near 2K. Those breed are supposed to be hypoallergenic, which doesnt mean much since a person can react differently to the individual dog and not just the breed. I am just hoping my allergic based asthma won't act up too much with a CC. I'd be willing to use an inhaler once in a while and get allergy shots for this breed versus a Standard Poodle, LOL. Good dogs though, but not for me.

The extra money may be the crop/dock/dew claws. My dane puppy from champion, health tested parents was $2K, plus $500 for the crop. Obviously no docking, and he also didn't have dew claws done.

Yep, cropping of ears, docking of tail and dewclaw removal are included. The ears alone run around $400 here in Southern NY and about 50% of the Vets won't do it. It is now NY law that it most only be done by a Vet under anesthesia at around 6-7 weeks. I believe 12 weeks is the max age permited. Thanks

Joe is a great guy and his price is pretty standard for those lines. I have met a few of his dogs and have similar lines in the dogs I breed. Ears, tails and microchips can make up I have hear close to $800.00 of a purchase price (not up here yet, thank god but I also have to drive 9 hours to have them done). I suspect if you contact others with similar type dogs/lines/pedigrees you will find them around the same price and likely more expensive.

Thank you everyone. I'm going tomorrow to a friends house that bought a dark blue brindle pup from Joe at Liberty. She is 11 months and weighs about 110 lbs. He said he did feed her puppy kibble when she was younger and now I know why most CC breeder don't recommend it. She is really big for a female.

Thanks, I went to see my friends female yesterday and she looked more like 100 lbs. I think he over exaggerated a bit. Lol Awesome dog!

If the parents held no titles he would most likely ask for 1500. That title stuff if ALOT of time and money.

This is a fair price. If you wanted a pick from a specific pair of dogs you could pay significantly more. Sometimes they will let Picks go cheaper if you agree to show , live close to the breeder and agree to breed back with them.In all honesty you need to go look at the quality for yourself. I visited a couple BYB and saw their dogs and puppies. then i went to a reputable breeder that shows their dogs, health checks and has the parents on site. And the difference in dogs was immense . Several BYB will not allow you to visit the dogs on site they will meet you at a park, they will usually bring the male only, if at all for a parent check. Do your homework , check AKC registration and pedigrees and if they are in driving distance visit the parents. They will almost always give you a health contract for 1 to 2 years.Your realationship with your breeder does not stop at pick up of the pup in my opinion. that is just the begining, i speak with mine every couple of weeks and send pictures.

I have a Large Male DDB and a female Corso x Neo she is a rescue. My Neo x cc barely sheds at all she will shed maybe two times a year. the coat is short with no under coat and easily maintained, though she will get musky smelling if not bathed at least once a month. My DDB on the other hand likes to make me fur carpets and i must sweep regularly to combat the fur. My DDB will cause sinus issues from time to time but we had no issues with the female i had her a year before the male was purchased. My prvious DDB that proceeded the Corso mix caused sinus issues as well. You will probably be fairly safe with allergies.

I have similar lines to Joe's (in fact, I think some are shared) and I paid close to that price with crop, microchip and dewclaw removal. To me, there was NO question I wanted a quality puppy from health tested, titled parents. I researched for many months, different lines and whatnot, until I narrowed it down precisely to who I wanted the sire and dam to be. The sire is from another well known kennel - Italica - who Joe partners with quite a bit.
My puppy just turned 14 weeks old and he is literally amazing. SO smart, so stable and gorgeous to top it off.

I think you get what you pay for with this breed - and when going with a kennel like Liberty, you can't go wrong. Good luck!

After further investigations, his price is definitely fair. I found a breeder that is asking $3500 for his Champion bred pups, and $3800 for pick of the litter, no thanks! Most of the better breeders seem to be in the mid 2K range for Champion stock. I've also found plenty of "CC Breeders" that are obviously just breeding for size, because they are almost Neapolitan huge. Lots and lots of poor and deceptive breeders out there! Thanks again everyone.

Seen a ton of pups for the 750 to 1250 range and most of those I would have never guess where even CC's.
I can also find a ton in the 1250 to 1500 range and those are generally untested and non show or working dogs that your flipping a coin with.
A good dog with tested parents and from champion lines generally 2500 for pet quality and 3000 to 3500 for show.

If you want t0 check top end priced just search working lines, Seen some in the 5k+ range.

Wow, for 5K he better clean my house and do the lawn. LOL I know Schutshund, and drug sniffing trained K9 dogs that we used in the PD were up there in price and that was for the better German Shepherds.

CaneCorsoLover - here are a few of my Maverick! The first he is 14 weeks (this past weekend), the last 2 he was 9 weeks. His mom is GCH Italica's The Sky is the Limit and his dad is GCH Italica's Fifty Shades of Grey.
But as gorgeous as he is, his temperament is just incredible!
