What's Normal....What's not...???

Hello all, our Logan is doing well now. He had a few days with an upset stomach, but all is ok for now. At 6 months old Logan weighed in at 50lbs and 21.5 in. Being that Logan is our first Corso, we were wondering if he is at a normal/abnormal weight and height? Our vet seems to think that Logan is in great physical shape, although he has not had much experience with Corso's. I understand that every Corso is has it's unique brand, just trying to figure out how much more or less growth to expect. We are not looking for him to be oversized...hoping for the average 26in. and 110lbs. Trying to be patient, but can hardly wait until this boy is full grown!

Regards,
Maurice

Do you know the height/weight of his parents? That could give you an idea of what height/weight he may be fully grown. My female is 90pds and Titan's daddy is 110pds fully grown. Titan is 101pds at 19mths so i figure he will be around 110pds like his dad.

When they're puppies we can't wait until they're full grown, and when they're full grown we miss the little puppy. LOL

I will post side pics of Logan tomorrow. I just uploaded pics of parents. Not sure of exact weight, but I'm guessing 110-115 lbs.

The 2 most recent pics are from about 2 weeks ago. He was 47lbs and 20in at that time.

Take pics of the pup while he is standing from the rear and side. You should be able to feel the last 3 ribs without applying too much pressure and see them when they are standing. Slow and steady growth is key for a mastiff to prevent joint and health issues.

He does look a LITTLE thin. Is he going thru a growth spurt? As that usually makes them look skinny, lanky etc.

He does look a little thin...What and how much are you feeding him?

He is on a raw food diet of chicken, beef, fish and some deer meat (1.4 lbs per day). He also receives with each meal (x2 per day)a 6-8 vitamin cubes (frozen like ice cubes) which consists of potatoes, broccoli, carrots, apples, spinach, bell peppers, yogurt, fish oil, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 raw eggs and 'Bac-Pac Plus vitamin powder. The vegetables are boiled for 5-6 min and mixed together with yogurt, fish oil and vitamin powder. How much food would you suggest for each feeding?

He seems to be going slow and steady. Since bringing him home on 6 Nov 13 (16 weeks old) he has steadily gained 2.5 - 3.5 lbs per week. Last week being the exception (he had diarrhea), he only gained 1 lb. We always hear about not putting on too much weight too quickly, because of the damage it can do to its joints. How much is too much and too quickly?

IMO, he looks healthy and a tad bit thin. What is his expected weight? 1.4 lbs of food sounds a little light. The normal is to feed them 2-3% of their expected weight in meat. Start at 3% and adjust accordingly depending on if they loose weight or gain too much weight.

For example, Titan weighs 130 lbs. I fed him 2 to 2 1/2 lbs of food per day. He started gaining too much weight so I reduced it to 2 lbs.

Expected weight 110 X 3% is roughly 3 lbs of food per day. He's being underfed. Increase his food to 3 lbs. If you notice he's getting too big, decrease to 2 1/2 lbs.

He does not look too "Thin" in my opinion. He is young and his appearance will change many times in the coming months. Why are people obsessed with fat dogs???
You want the dog with it's tongue constantly hanging out drooling all over the place after minimal exercise!?!.

I don't know that I'd go all the way to 3lbs/day... but if you do, build up slowly... too much food at once can lead to loose poops, too.

Could be he's thin this week from having an upset tummy last week. Growing slower is better than being chunky, but I'd probably up his food and/or treats a little, too - but not much... maybe just a few oz a day. I think the pic that makes him look "thin" is from the top side where the divot from rib cage to hips does look a little pronounced. From the side and rear, he looks great to me. That the vet likes his figure, also makes me think he's just fine the way he is.

Denna's an EM, 22months old, 143lbs, and expected to eventually get to her mom's weight of 185lbs... but she only gets 3lbs/day, and often a little less. The amount is definitely dog-dependent.

I love your 'vitamin cube' idea! I'd probably switch out the plain potato for sweet potato (Denna LOVES sweet potato), but the rest looks great - I may have to 'borrow' that idea. :) I only throw veggies in occasionally, but the more I read, the more I think the dogs do benefit from them. Did you get your cube recipe from a book anywhere, or is this your own concoction??
