What would a good Mastiff do?

If your whole family were home but everyone was off in their rooms etc.... not near the front door and someone just walked on in, without knocking, even someone who came over daily, how would your dog react?

Kryten will bark, glare and growl at whoever comes in. I know this because my Mom, whom he loves, walked in one day while I was in the basement. Even when she spoke to him he didn't relax until I told him that she was ok. If he reacts like that with someone he knows I don't think I need to worry about strangers entering without my knowledge.

Okay. I feel better now. :) That scene played out yesterday when my daughter came to pick her kids up early. We were all busy elsewhere in the house, not expecting her an hour early. Xerxes charged the door, barking, snarling and had her in a corner. No contact at all, just looking and sounding menacing. I came around the corner and said "I got it" and he instantly became "Mister, oh you came to pet me? I love you so much!". My daughter was shaking in her combat boots. LOL Needless to say she won't just walk in anymore. I thought this was the right response for him but wasn't completely sure because he does see her every day and knows her well.

My one year old pup loses it the second she hears the door. She barks deeper than usual and will sprint toward the door if possible. If she gets the command "It's okay" from me she'll usually stop barking. If it's a roommate or someone she knows, she switches from being a guard dog to the most excited happy dog ever.

Now, if I'm sleeping or unaware, it's an entirely different situation. If we're taking a long car ride and I pull over for a nap, she sits in the passenger seat and watches everyone/everything. If someone gets 5-10 feet from the car she starts growling. If they come any closer and she starts barking and wakes me up. If I'm sleeping in my room and someone tries to open my door without permission she stops that in a hurry. It's only happened a couple times since I fully expect any roommate to knock before opening my door if it's closed, but when it has happened, she made sure that no one was allowed to come in my room unless I woke up and told her "it's okay". One time visiting my parents at their house my mom (who my dog loves, although she hasn't spent a lot of time with her) went to open the door unannounced and like other times, the guard dog kicked in. I woke up to my mom laughing while yelling through the door "this is MY house!". Once I rolled out of bed and told her it was alright, she switched to being excited to go out and see my mom, and proceeded to sprint out the door to her to say hi.. and pee on her foot by accident.

Oh, I almost forgot.. One night around 12:30am, out of nowhere she was just going crazy. Growling, barking, and then scratching at my door to get out. My driveway + carport are at the opposite end of the house. I let her out of my room and she sprints to our side door that goes to the car port. Up until then I had never seen her react in such a way. Sure enough, I go outside and someone gets out of my car and was just staring at me, then took off running. I pursued from a distance long enough to get an accurate description and location to relay to the police. Long story short, thanks to my pup some guy that was going through my car ended up spending the night in jail :)

My dog will lick anyone she has seen a few times and we only had one experience like that, once a friend got into my house without knocking, he was a close buddy but had never been there and my dog never seen him before so he was lucky he only took a couple steps in so he had the chance to jump out and close the gate cause my dog turn berserker. But over all i think it would also depend on tha atitude of the person, i´m sure a calm person who knows how to deal with dogs could change the situation.

I don't know. Dozer is near deaf and Duncan is old and worn out but once Jade or Duncan barks Dozer gets going too. I think Jade would at least bark but maybe she would attack, I just have not tested her yet.

Xerxes doesn't attack.... he just kind of holds them there until I get on the scene. My daughter couldn't get back out the door. LOL He just kept her cornered looking all menacing. She has nicknamed him Cujo now. LOL

Think it depends on which type of mastiff......mine is an English x and she reacts appropriately, barking and using her body to block. The only people she doesn't bark at is my daughter and mom and sis who live upstairs. My daughter lived at home when we got her...actually come to think of it, she barks at my daughter too.

anyone who knows her isn't afraid of her barking but do respect her and wait for me to come and let her know "i got it". those who dont know her wont come near. mind you she's not alone, she's got my black lab/pit with her to back her up.

We were not in different rooms. I was on the couch with my son who was 1 at the time and hubby was in the shower. I knew his cousin was coming over and left the door open. I told her come in since my son was asleep in my arms. She did and he had her on the ground before he even knew who it was. He liked her and never had problems. He was over protective of my kids! In general we always put him outside before ppl would come in. We are trying to train our pup we have now to sit when people come over. She is 15 Wks so hopefully we'll train her early enough
