We decided to spruce things up and fix some things under the hood. If you notice any issues, feel free to contact us as we're sure there are a few things here or there that we might have missed in our upgrade.
Start making sure he knows all his command to hand signals as well as verbal commands. Its not perfect, but its a start. I'm not sure there's much you can do to slow the process though.
I agree with putting all your commands to hand signals. I have done this with Barron since he was a pup. It comes in handy on a windy day when they can't hear you or in old age.
From an eternal optimist...this is a change; it is not inherently good or bad. It is simply a different way of experiencing life. This difference creates the possibility of new experiences, greater skills, and possibly an even deeper bond between you and Dozer.
I've always taught hand signals along with regular training they are easy to use and come in handy when you are in a crowd and your voice can't be heard. With a deaf animal keep in mind they can still feel vibrations and are very adpt at signaling. I had a deaf cat, a white beauty with blue eyes. I could slap my hands together or stomp and he would come running. Since that was how we communicated I made up our own little language made of silly looking stomps and claps and it worked beautifully. Leo was a funny cat!
I hear you and feel your pain! I owned a boxer a long time ago who lost her hearing and eventually her sight as well. She did live on for 4 more years, but I can understand how it must be for you
Your strength will help Dozer along as well, trust me! My prayers and wishes are with you.
hes fine mike, like CeeCee said, its just different. he probably has no idea hes missing nything. take it from someone who wears hearing aids and really enjoys the peace and quiet when i dont have them in.
