What is your mastiff hauler?

We have a Suburban and a Toyota Matrix. The Matrix works fine to haul two mastiffs on short trips as long as there are no back seat passengers. We use the Suburban for longer trips. We just took a cross-country trip with our Suburban and an airstream trailer. (Blogged extensively at my website soshiny.net) One dog has no problem jumping up into the back. The other one will put his front paws up, then we help him step on the tailgate and give a big shove. After daily practice for three weeks, he was starting to climb in on his own.

We had one of those tension mounted dog barriers with the sliding bars, but Chewie systematically destroyed it. We had to jerry rig a new barrier out of our Xpen and bungie cords and drug him with benedryl to get home. When a 170 pound dog wants to get through a barrier, not much can stop him. We are looking into car harnesses that we can hook to the cargo rings in the floor.

Coincidentally, I was looking at buying a used Matrix recently. How are they on mileage/driveability? I haven't gotten a chance to test-drive one, but I insist on a standard this time (tired of the no-thrill autos).

Hi All, new here and saw this thread and had to share...Tank our rescue DDB rides almost everyday in
My 07 Mustang GT. He has made a mess with drool in the back, not to mention the fur, but He loves to go for rides and is quite a sight in the backseat!

My Buddha mobiles are a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV. I just drop the back seat down and Lay down some moving blankets and he loves it.

That's a nice ride for Buddha! I bought one of those hammock things for the back of my four door sports sedan. Seems to be working well so far.

I have an 03 Escalade ESV so the one that is the same size as the Suburban and my guy rides in his kennel in it for now being that he is still only 3 months old but once he outgrows his travel kennel I think I am gonna cover the back seat up and keep the center seats folded down. Should give him lots of space without having him be on top of me all the time.

When I had my Dane, we drove a Hyundai Tucson. The back seat folds in 2 sections, so one section was always folded down for her - dog bed and all! She fit, but there was fur on the ceiling...

Right now the cars we drive aren't "mastiff friendly" so I am definitely buying a new car before I purchase!! But of course hubby is keeping his '66 Mustang. It's a coupe, so getting into the backseat is a bit difficult. (Especially since it's an older model.) I don't think fur kids will be allowed in it! He's invested so much money into it I doubt he wants a finishing touch of fur & drool!

I love trucks, but the mpg is not enough for how much I drive. My top choice so far is the new models of the Jeep Compass & Patriot. They're very roomy on the inside, don't look so "boxed out" on the outside, get decent mpg, and they're not a BOAT! Lol. There are a few other choices for me but I am doing extra research before I buy as this vehicle will have to last me & the dogs a long, long time. Glad to see some of my choices are listed here as "good" Mastiff vehicles! :)

Thanks.
If you ever need some extra blankets to lay on top of the hammock for rainy days or for something to lay on when going to the park etc, there's a guy on Craigslist (S.F bay area) that sell brand new extra large moving blankets for like $10.00 a piece, that work great for saving the interior from huge paws with claws LOL

Murphys ride is a 05 jeep Cherokee . I keep him in the back in case of an accident. He can't be thrown around and we can't be squished by him if there was one. I think I have to get a ramp for him due to the fact the back end is so high. He gets in and out easy but I don't want the impact to jolt him and give him issues before his time. He can sit and lay down in the back no problem but not roam around which we like

Duchess rides in my 2011 Camaro for the moment with a sheet over the seat & strict instructions not to drool, sneeze, fart, or try to climb in my lap while driving. She does follow these rules for the most part & will just lay down. LOL. When she needs an upgrade she'll be riding in a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.

Our first EM rode everywhere in my 2004 Hyundai Tiburon. She barely fit & her head would hit the top of the car by the sunroof. It was strange bc she would feel more safe & comfortable in that car & would get scared if we ever put her in the truck. I think it was bc the truck was higher off the ground. I always joked that I was going to have to open the sunroof in that car just to give her a little more head room. :)
