What if your vet did this?

This was posted to a FB group I am in.

The dog has a broken toe, and the vet put a gumball under the toes to keep the dog from putting pressure on the foot.....

I would at the very least have a different vet, and most likely be suing for the cost of future and reimbursement of previous vet bills! That is ridiculous! That poor baby. [emoji17]

OMG!!! But how does that happen without the owner knowing what the vet is doing????? I am right there with my dog for lots of things, other than surgery/xrays types of things, but biopsies, blood draw, anal expression, I am right there. What is wrong with people!!!!

Some vets won't let you come with when they go to the back. I have three different vets we like to use and none of them allow us to go in the back with them when they do stuff with our dogs. Around here everyone is super conscious of liability issues so the rules are pretty strict. I hate that they dont let us in the back but I also understand the reasons.

The vets must be super lenient here because all the vets (3 different places) I have been to have always let me watch and handle my dog(s) and Hector's vet even teaches me things so that I can do myself which saves me money and am really thankful for. I hope to find such practices when I move away.

I think the Silicon Valley and California in general is fairly well known for being sue happy. Even when I was in college and getting recommendation letters from professors for grad school they would make me sign something saying I would never look at the recommendations since it was policy to protect them from potential law suits. I knew I only received good recommendations because I did well in their classes and used to tutor other students for them as well but the legal liability thing is such a huge issue around here. It's actually pretty sad especially when you have a long term relationship with someone (whether a college professor or your vet) and they still have to protect themselves that way.

I did have a vet when I lived in El Cajon in Southern California who sounds much like your current vet. I had an elderly cat at the time with a lot of health issues and the vet taught me to give fluids through IV among other things that I ended up learning how to do on my own with the vets help. I have had no such luck finding similar vets around here though.

Another reason to stay away from CA if possible.
