What do you use for fleas and heartworm control?

For years I used Frontline (as needed) for fleas and ticks and HeartGard for heartworm prevention. But the Frontline stopped being really effective – I had a flea-allergic dog for years – and on the advice of my vet have segued to Sentinal for all three dogs, including the new puppy. Vet says Trifexis is actually better at killing adult fleas but cautioned it would get really expensive when the pup gets to be 150 lbs +.

I do live in a semi-rural area near farms and with abundant wildlife so eliminating all fleas in the environment is not a viable option for me. I just want to keep them off the cats and dogs. Seems there are so many options on the market right now and I haven't been keeping up!

The Sentinal works, don't get me wrong. But it seems like some bugs build resistance over time so I am wondering what the next good thing is for fleas and other parasites.

We use Trifexis and have been happy thus far. The max dose is 61-120lbs, so we are at the max dose right now. It costs us $54/month. We just got to that point and have been buying from the vet due to needing weight each month to get the right dose. If we buy 12 months, we get a month free, so that's the plan ASAP. I'll take whatever free I can get :)

I gave up, I don't have any flea treatment for my dogs at the moment. I was using seresto collars and got terrible results. The funny thing is that the fleas are less without the collar wtf.

I don't do heartworm. It's not a problem here. So sorry I'm completely unhelpful lol.

I do Sentinal spectrum on mine, Luke was on Trifexis but when he got to the weight he needed 2 I switched to Sentinal,a little bit cheaper. Never had a flea problem so don't know how well it works, or maybe I never had a problem because it works, who knows, lol. Heartworm is bad here so prevention is a must.

My boys are both of Trifexis and I'm
Thrilled with it. It's costly since the both need two tablets a piece per month but it is worth it in my opinion.

I use Advantage Multi on all three dogs and both the cats for heartworm, flea, and internal parasite prevention. I've always been happy with the results.

We're in Hector's neighborhood (Pacific NW), so no heartworm preventative here, either.

We also have a delightfully flea-free neighborhood?!?! So... we only treat as needed, which is when boarding or out of the area camping. Mosquitoes are a big camping hazard, so we opt for ones that also repel mosquitoes.

Since we normally only buy stuff once a year, we go with the vet's recommendations for that year... which seems to change all the time. Rotating is probably not a bad idea, anyway, as I've read that there are some bugs gaining resistance to the spot-on treatments.
I think we've tried Frontline, Advantix, and Revolution, all without issues.

I've also come across a new "all natural" option that comes highly recommended, called "wondercide" (wondercide.com). It uses cedar oil as the main repellent/pesticide. I'm still working through the sample set that I purchased... So far so good with it, too. Not sure how well it would work in highly buggy areas (like Florida or Texas)...

I'm really hoping major fends well with fleas. Frontline doens't work on most dogs any more I would say...and most of the oral medicines aren't safe for dogs with a history of seizure so I'm not really sure what the plan is if/when I start finding fleas.

For Yogi, I tried bravecta this year. We don't have issues with fleas, but ticks are THICK. And Heartguard.

For the puppy, her breeder contract doesn't allow for internal flea/tick meds, so I also give Heartguard and she got Frontline. I'm seeing good results with all.

I do hesitate with all of it... but where we are, it's only a few months out of the year, they are not constantly on it anyway.

Well, next month I am switching to Trifexis cost be damned. I keep finding fleas on the puppy! Apparently the Sentinel doesn't kill the adult fleas, it makes them unable to breed and kills the eggs. I hate seeing even a single one on Booker.

Seems effective on the adult dogs, maybe fleas find puppies more attractive?

50.00 cost to treat 4 dogs all year...we do go once a year and do a worm check just as a prevention maintenance thing...
