Wet runny nose, and eye goo Need some help here

First off we have had Murphy for 3 weeks now. He is a 2 1/2 EM.

Is it normal for EM's to have very wet noses? And what about eye goo in the corners of their eyes. I didn't think there would be so much "unknown" when adopting a grown dog. I have tried to do google searches but its getting all confusing. One says this, one says that, and found nothing on Mastiffs just general dog info. Seems to be wetter when he is outside and I understand it could be due to smelling and heat...When he is inside its not bad but still wet. And as for the goo in eyes, I am cleaning the corner of his eyes atleast 5-10 times a day weather he is inside or out. I also notices that his lower eye line is wet sometimes like we would get if the wind is blowing in our faces.

I figured I'd see if it was normal here or not before I jump to make the vet call. Sometimes the interent can be a pain in the arse

Our dogs always have eye boogers; they also run in & out all day, & I'm sure part of it has to do with mold &/or pollen in the air. Their noses, lips, chins, etc are wet all the time, too. At least 2 of them. Bella the princess very seldom gets slobbery. (eye roll)
As far as the wet eye, Murphy could have something in his eye, or he could have entropion. The lid rolls into the eye & the eyelashes irritate the eye, so it waters. Keep an eye on it; if it continues or he starts rubbing his eye, I would get him to the vet.

Azzy constantly has eye boogers too. We've tried switching diets and meds and it turns out she's just a boogery girl, some mastiffs are.

I noticed that he only gets wet eyes when he is outside...maybe wind? The boogers in his eyes are constant. I was thinking of entropion but haven't noticed any red or irritation. He doesn't seem bothered by it at all. Its suppose to be cooler the next few days. We hit 45 with humidex. So I will keep looking. Thanks so much guys

Sadie has a lot of eye boogers. Our vet told me it could be allergies, but as long as the discharge is white, and not yellow or any other color, not to worry.

We have he same problem with the eyes and it is worse in the spring and summer with all of the pollen and stuff in the air...No problems in the winter and as long as it isn't yellow or discoloured we just keep wiping his eyes. Polysporin eyedrops work well too when they are really red and runny....Good Luck!

ya its just white. I don't like the wet bottom lid. And let me explain, it isn't wet all the time, just once in awhile. I am going to look up the entropion a little further

Just looked and I don't think thats what it is

What about Allergies? I am going to fire off an email to his previous ownwers and see what they say
Ok so Im adding to this post. It seems to be Murphys nose leaks when he is outside in the sun. Is that normal? He has been in the house all morning, he just went outside, laid in the sun to sleep and I noticed his nose leaking(not alot) but it wasn't doing it in the house. So I am assumimg this is normal. It well is hard when you don't know what is normal and having my first Mastiff adds to the unknown.
Well I'm off to do the Murphy laundry lol

My boy's nose does the same thing when he is hot so maybe that is all it is...I don't think I would worry too much as long as the discharge is clear and not yellow or green.

no yellow or green,
I love this forum. The help from Mastiff owners on what is normal with these guys is priceless. Mastiffs truly are unique.

Boris has a wet nose when he is outside and getting hot, too. I agree about the clear versus yellow or green discharge. He also gets white bits (I wouldn't quite call them 'boogers' as they are very small) in the corners of his eyes. I wipe them several times a day. So I wouldn't worry unless the discharges/boogers change colour.

Well its normal for me, some days are better than others but for the most part I get the eye gunk in the morning. However Thor has ectropian as well so it tends to be a little worse.

So Murphy and I went to the vet. He has a re occuring ear infection. I talked to his previous vet and he had one in Dec, March and now. His new vet recommended changing his food which I already did. She said usually re-occuring infections are food allergy. So in a few weeks we will know if it was food. As for the eyes she said yes he is showing Entropion but it isn't anything to worry about. It isn't anything big right now and until it bothers him we will just watch it with his visits. Other then that she gives him a clean bill of health. She is a new vet to us as well and he just loved her (I think my husband did too lol).
So now I can rest and not worry.
I want to thank everyone that has replied and help Murphy and myself along the way thus far. Everyones experience has help me so much.

Re-occuring ear infections could also be a sign of thyroid problems. Next time you go to the vet, ask her about it and maybe have them do a T4 test just to make sure. The frequent ear infections is just one of many symptoms. I am not trying to scare, just better safe then sorry.

Oh no that is great info to have. Like I said. Process of elimination. It is a "yeast" infection. I don't know if that makes a difference for T4 testing, but I will for sure write that on his vet papers. He was on raw food, then onto BB chicken. I have switched him to grain free chicken free food. She said we will know if its food in about 6 weeks. I didn't ask how many ever infections he had prior to Dec. She is going to go through his records when she gets then from past vet. Fingers crossed!!!

How often do you clean the ears at home? If it is a yeast infection (my lab got it all the time) it could also be due to heavy droopy ears combined with hot, humid weather. I clean Sadies ears 2x per week and when she is resting on the couch, I will fold her ears back to "air them out". Could also be the chicken in the kibble he is allergic to.

My first thought was the chicken. So a few days ago I switched his food. That was even before I knew he had this infection. I had called to get alittle history on him and once I heard reed occurring infection and learned on here how some Mastiffs don't tolerate grain I switched him. He have had him 3 weeks and have cleaned his ears twice. I didn't want to.come off as too pushy with him right away. Wanted him to feel comfortable. I will for sure flip his ears. I have also heard of stuff you can use as a preventative

I just use a ear cleaner from PetSmart as a preventative. The prescription ear cleaners are great but expensive, and they stink :scared2:. I clean her ears as part of out regular grooming session. She loves getting brushed, so when it is ear cleaning day I will start with that and finish with something she loves (a brushing and a good belly rub). After a while it will be just like any other routine. I have to say, she does not love getting her ears cleaned, but she tolerates it and her vet appreciates it too. It makes her job easier when it comes to vet visits.:p

We have the Avena cleaner. He hates it. He knows what's happening, flops down, becomes "jello" and then rolls on his back. He becomes "goofy". Its too funny to watch him turn into a toddler having a temper tantrum when he doesn't like something. We are learning as we go. Thank you so much for the help
