Weather and stiffness?

As some of you know, Angus has been nursing a partial ligament tear.

He is on restricted activity: on-leash at all times, no jumping (although he does sneak on and off the couch when I'm not looking), we do "sniff and stroll" walks while out pottying... and when the weather is suitable, we do longer walks on the weekends (these have been approved by the vet as long as they are on flat ground).

In the last two-weeks we have not gone for any extensive walks. He has gone out 3x a day for the most part and gone on a sniff and stroll type of walk. These last between 7-10 minutes.

Medication: No formal prescribed medication, but I have him on Glycoflex Stage II.

We were using organic turmeric, but I ran out probably 3 weeks ago. I am picking up some more today. He also gets chicken feet added into his meals, but he's always eaten chicken feet so that is nothing particularly new.

In the last couple weeks, we have seen a very drastic drop in the weather. A couple weeks ago we were still reaching between 15-20C. Currently, overnight and mornings have been -4C.

Angus' knee has REALLY stiffened up. So far this morning, he has hardly been putting weight on it and when he does, he just barely rests his foot on the ground. I tried to have him 'sit' to trim his nails, but he refused to sit down and went into an instant 'down' on the couch.

I have allowed him to be out with the girls, but obviously, it does result in them sometimes playing. It's usually on the couch and very low impact, so I haven't thought too much about it. Like right now, he's on his back and Thalia bouncing around him nipping playfully. He's remaining on his back and using his paws and mouth to play back.

Do you think the weather change has caused his leg to stiffen up again? It seems to have started when the weather started dropping drastically. Up until then, I thought we were making progress. He also started the Glycoflex around the same time, but I don't think that would have a negative effect on him.

I am also thinking of rotating all 3 dogs to ensure that Angus doesn't play too hard with the girls at any given time. I don't know quite how I'd work that yet.. I'm trying to run the numbers in my head of how many hours each would really need out. Right now, with just the girls being rotated, we just work it day by day and it works, but rotating 3 dogs is a whole different story.

With rotating 3 dogs, would you suggest putting Angus' crate in an open area, or would that just be rubbing it in that another dog is out and he's locked away? Currently, the 2 girls' crates are in our bedroom an Angus' crate is in the spare bedroom.

Also thinking of making him up a big batch of bone broth to sooth him.

Oops... I posted this in the wrong section. I meant for it to be in health and nutrition.... Is it possible to have it moved, please?

Part way through Kryten's recovery his leg stiffened up to the point where he wasn't putting any weight on it while standing. It turns out the muscles had become tight with the reduced activity. I was able to get him using his leg again by a combination of massaging his leg (mostly above the joint) and PROM exercises. A lot of people I spoke to recommended using a warm compress to help but Kryten said no to that. Kryten was never left out with Jiggers unless there was direct supervision but they were allowed to interact throughout his recovery. That said he does seem to have wind induced pain at times, cold seems to have no effect on him.

Thank you for the response! I will definitely start massaging his leg and doing some prom exercises.

I'm just watching some canine massage videos and interestingly, there are a few techniques I have been unknowingly using with my dogs whenever they're relaxed on the couch with me.

I have also bookmarked some prom exercise videos. I will have to look at them a bit later as I am just headed off to work.

Thanks again for the suggestions! He seems to favour the leg the most when he gets up from laying down. After a quick walk around the yard, he seems to put more weight on it. When coming out of his crate, or getting up after a nap, he keeps the foot entirely off the ground.
